Students have to wash their hands? The HORROR!!!!

Parents of students in an Orlando, FL school are up in arms, why? Because their kids are being forced to wash their hands and rinse their mouths after lunch! The HORROR! The reason? One of the students has a severe allergy to peanuts. Any contact with peanut oils can kill her. Some of the other parents suggest she gets home schooled, and complain that their kids shouldn't have to "change their lives" to accommodated one student. I don't get it. Are parents admitting that their kids don't ever wash their hands? Shouldn't young people be taught to wash their hands, especially before and after eating, anyway? I don't see the problem here. http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20110322/lf_nm_life/us_peanut_allergy

Are they monitoring these kids to make sure they do wash their hands? I hope so and it's about time! Yes it would change the kids lives, they'd probably live longer, have less health problems and have fresher breath. Change is good sometimes. By the way those parents don't realize if this child was forced to be home schooled it would cost them and only them in taxes.

What? That's just crazy. I can't imagine arguing about such a thing. It's actually a good habit to get into for many reasons. I don't see the problem either. It's personal hygene and takes just a moment and they benefit as well as the kid with allergies. The parents who feel he should be home schooled would no doubt feel differently if it were their child. You would think that the parents would be able to choose their battles more selectively. I guess maybe they are blessed in that they don't have bigger battles with their kids and they find something like this worth their time.

I am sorry; but, this is a bit extreme. I do believe children should wash their hands both before and after eating; but, having them "rinse their mouths" is just stupid. What do they think these children are going to do - run around "frenching" each other????? What type of school is this that that type of behavior would even be anticipated! Also, if this child's allergy to peanuts is so severe, the child cannot even be in the same room as peanut products. So, if no one is permitted to bring peanut products into the school, the hand washing and mouth rinsing is not needed in the first place!

Children (and adults too) touch their mouths far more often than they realize. If her allergy is that severe, she would die if a child chewed on his finger and then touched something. Kids should be rinsing their mouths after eating anyways; it prevents cavities.

I see what speakeasy is saying. It seems extreme at a glance but really...if it saves a life??? Is it really so extreme? it only takes a minute and it is good for us and not doing so could put another child's life in jepardy....when you look at it like that, it's not so extreme at all.

Rinsing out the mouth after eating is just plain good hygeine. In our schools the kids are given time to wash before and after eating, and encouraged to either rinse their mouths or brush their teeth. Asking the allergic child to be secluded from others is just plain cruel. I think that the kids should be taught to be concerned for others in their daily lives and realize that what they do can severly effect others. Good life lesson if you ask me. And the parents who complained, well...there but by the Grace of God go I. It COULD have been one of THEIR kids.

Far as I know, nobody at our public schools enforces that.

My kid should never have to wash his hands or clean out his mouth. That's what I wanted for my kid all my life - to be the stinker in school. You have parents flipping out because they don't want their kids to have to wash their hands or rinse their mouth out. Never mind that good hygiene is probably going to save them money on cold meds and it may prevent dentist visits. Now I know why Howie Mandel is how he is. We have a bunch of nasty people running around, crying the blues about cleaning themselves. American schools should be preparing young people for life. I'm sure there are many kids in school who would like to become a doctor when they grow up. Well... ditch the germs, Johnny! Keeping clean is a valuable lesson. And if your parents are against that, I don't know wtf is going on. I remember some of the things I used to pick up when I was kid. I had two toothbrushes, one for my teeth and one my mom used to make me clean my fingernails with. (I probably mixed 'em up a few times. ) School should change kids' lives in a positive way. That's why we pay for them and why, at least until recently, we basically stfu about the union influence on public schools and subsequently our children and every other POS thing they do to sissify kids. I say washing your hands is a good lesson - one of those super simplistic lessons that should have been taught in the home in the first place! Even with one parent working two jobs, how hard is it to say "Don't forget to wash your hands"?

The more I've thought about this, the more I'm changing my mind slightly. I've been hearing that her allergies are so severe that even being around peanuts can kill her. Holy ballz! Maybe she should be home schooled! But maybe kids should still wash their hands too.

i don't understand what's the problem with this.Children should be taught to wash their hands and rinse their teeth. These are good habits and if children get them at early age then they get habitual to it which is good thing.Parents should support rather than spoil their children

For me if I had children, especially in a public school I would want them to be taught that washing hands is important as you never know what type of germs might be there, or people bringing in for sure, and a school requesting something like this and parents complaining does seem out of line. If they are complaining about something like this does make you wonder when and if they ever are made to wash their hands, etc. for sure.

I think all schools should enforce washing hands and rinsing mouths. Ideally it would be reinforcement as I am sure parents are doing the same at home. HOWEVER I think they should because it is good hygiene and children are walking petrie dishes. Regarding the peanut allergy. I disagree. simply, where does it end? My daughter is allergic to grass. So now I want all parks to remove grass. No my daughter will not die from being on grass, but she will break out and be very uncomfortable for days. But all of the rules and rules of rules. why do 200 kids have to not have peanut butter because one can not? At what point do we draw the line before everybody is walking around in a bubble. I know peanut allergies can be deadly. But if it were my child, I would not take the chance that one child had peanut butter toast before coming to school. I would home school. I also would NEVER expect a school to change everything for everybody for one person.

So teaching children good hygiene is no longer acceptable?! Really these parents should be ashamed. I DO SEE THE problem. It's the parents who need to complain about something. Good grief!

Hi. ParaTed2k. I think that all students should wash their hands anyway. But to keep this other child that is in school with severe allergies is just silly. I seriously think that if this child is this sick, that they should let her stay at home. Being exposed to peanuts is very serious. I think that she should not be kept into school, it is just impossible for her to not come into contact with the peanuts.

Hi para ted, This thing can happen in united states of america only where parents would fight for rinsing mouth and washing hands post lunch. This is absurd. i mean every school teacher worth his salt would try to oncorprate this habit in childrent that they should do this thing ir wash hands before and after meals and rinse after meals. Well our teachers made sure of this even 15 years before and none of our parents ever thought it was bad.

Oh my god fancy a school teaching the children basic hygene its nothing short of child abuse i don't think. Its just basic manners and its not like they have to radically change their lives to accomodate the student their not even being asked to stop eating peanut.

From what I understand the Peanut Allergy is one of those that can be sever and all it takes is very minor contact. My granddaughter's school has set aside a Peanut Free Table because of a student who is allergic to peanuts. I don't think this is too much to ask of other students.

How absurd. When I was in school, in elementary school we lined up before lunch to use the bathroom and wash our hands. After lunch, we had recess. Then we lined up again to use the bathroom and wash our hands. Teachers made sure everyone washed their hands. We also - after lunch - brushed our teeth. Everyone did. It surprises me that this is an issue. Here in our area, when school starts, each kid is asked to bring a huge container of hand sanitizer to school. The kids are at least supposed to be using that. And in many schools today, you're not allowed to even bring anything that might have peanuts in it because so many have developed allergies. Do these irate parents not understand that kids who are horribly allergic to peanuts can die from being exposed to them? Hmmm. Don't you bet that those same parents suggesting that she home school are the same ones who actually oppose home schooling for most kids?

Wash hands it's very good habit. And all child should wash there hands before take food and after take foods. In this way they can prevent so many disease to occur. And school is the learning period so if students learn from the school then that they can follow whole life. Good day!

Washing hand prevent and reduce chance of infectio - Kids from early age should learn to keep hands clean.
Washing hand habit is good for kids. I reduce chances of infection and such like Hand and mouth disease and also like hepatatis and such.I think it is good habit to teach children clean habits and do no harm.Teaching children to wash hands is not like change their lives events.Allergy can happen everywhere in daily lifes like in school restraurant and such.I guess they are things he/she can do like wearing long sleeve and overall to protect herself.

Hello PAraTed2k I don't see the problem here either! If the school has decided to make it a point of enforcing good hygiene on children, then it should be welcomed by the parents. Why are these parents against something that is good for their children? Also, keeping in mind the growing rise in various epidemics such as the recent one of Swine Flu, I think this move should have been welcome by the parents in fact. Not only allergies scuh as experienced by the girl in question, but various other cold and flu infections could be avoided and kept at bay. There is no question that this is something that is good for the children and this issue should not be twisted to something futile like "change their lives" kind of thing.

parents are just worried for their children that's why they are being alarmed of that simple problem.
