Dear all,
The second quarter finals between India and Australia was the best match in this World Cup so far. We have had good ones in the league matches. But this was all that the match had promised. The occasion, the big players coming to the party for the big match, the tension, the anticipation.... all of it made it the best match so far.... And the result has given way to an even bigger match...As Ravi Shastri called it "The Mother Of All Matches".... India vs Pakistan.....
Let us dwell on this match, a little. Australia scored 260. Ricky Ponting scored a century. I have never been a big fan of Ponting as a sportsman, but he is a great batsman. He shut up all his critics with him scoring that century. It was a true captain's innings. His previous match against India in a world cup also was a century. But it was in the 2003 Wold Cup final and Ponting batted India out of the match. But this time even though Australia did not win, it just proved that players like Ponting, Tendulkar are all big match players....This match was a fitting end to Ponting's reign in World cups.
Australia had gotten off to a decent start, but were always kept under the check by the Indian bowlers. David Hussey came in and played a gem of an innings to propel Aus to 260. Indian batsmen too had a decent start and even though they lost wickets, they were able to put up decent partnerships regularly. Sachin went past 18000 One Day runs yesterday, while completing a half century. There was the "Strange" comedy off errors when Gambhir was run out in bizarre fashion, after three attempts in one over....!!!!!
Australia showed why they were the world champions for three consecutive world cups, when they put the pressure back on India, which in the end led tot he wicket of an out of form Dhoni... India needed a sensible partnership then and Raina came in and did just that. Australia sadly did not have good enough bowlers to apply pressure in the middle overs. I am talking about spinners. And in end that made all the difference.
I have criticized Raina in the past, but this inning of his needs to be applauded. He did not do anything silly. He played sensible cricket and along with Yuvraj who has been playing well in this world cup, saw the match through. I hope that Raina can do that consistently in the future..
The Indian team raised themselves when they were fielding and bowled well, (may be not exceptionally), and batted well...In the end it was nice team effort...!!!!
The result is that there will be new champion at the end of this World cup for sure. But there will be one team from the sub continent for sure...!!!!!!

I am not sure if this was the best match of the World Cup as there have been quite a few great matches. But it was one of the best high stakes matches in recent times. Australia batted quite well with Ricky Ponting leading from the front with a great century. India then fought back well and despite a wobble in the middle managed to maintain the cool to win the match. Yuvraj was again the finisher for India ensuring that India got over the line without any last minute heart aches.
Cheers!

Dear Ram,
Yes I agree, there were a few good matches in this World Cup already. But I guess, matches between other countries do not matter that much as one's home country's. I mean, I route for India, and plus the hype around the match and the twists and turns in the match and seeing Australia eliminated "finally" made the match all the more special for me.
it will be a good semi final match...!!!

Me and My partner were up till 4.00am this morning watching this match. We were so nervous after 45 overs. My partner was literally shouting hard such late when India won. I was amazed to see his craze. But yes, i must admit it was a great match and i am really looking forward to IND v PAK match next wednesday.

Yes it was a nerve wrecking game, which kept both the teams interested till the last run was scored. I do not blame your partner for screaming...!!! Once any one gets to know cricket, then they all get involved. And plus this match was like a mini final...!!! I had almost all my nails chewed off ...:D
I know that the India Pakistan match will be even more interesting...!!!

Hi Dear Balu!! I agree yesterday's match was simply a feast to a Cricket fan! There was every thing in the match in appropriate amounts. Both the teams exhibited their talents in all the areas like batting bowling and ground fielding! There were fantastic shots played by the by the batsmen and fantastic deliveries by the bowlers. The ground fielding by both the teams was simply superb. Ricky Ponting fielded very impressively in spite of so many injuries he had. The match was never one sided, it was swinging like Sea-Saw, some times favouring india and other time Australia.
There were moments of excitement, there were moments of suspense and there were moments of disappointment too! Though Sachin could not complete his 100th century, he could complete his 18000 runs in One day Test Cricket yesterday in this match. The decision of the captain in selecting Raina for Indian team was ably justified by this young lad! Yuvraj exhibited a excellent temperament and played coolly to take the Indian Team to success. Most of all yesterday's match was not won by India because of one or two players but it was the combined and sincere efforts of all the players which made this success a possible one!
Though the Indians are not famous for ground fielding , yesterday they managed to save about 15 to 16 runs in this match! Thus I think this match was undoubtedly one of the best matches so far we have seen in this World Cup! Thanks !

Dear AKRao,
I agree with you... Yesterday's match was surely a feast for cricket lovers. This is why there should only be 10 teams playing the world cup instead of 14. Like this we have more matches of this standard.
Indians surely raise their standards when they play against Australia. The resilience of the Indian side has increased when compared to the side about 15 years ago. There was a time when the Australians used to sledge and we used to just listen. Now we go and give back with interest...!!!
Yes it is great to see Yuvraj performing to his true credentials. This is because he himself has realized his true value to the team....He has matured as a cricketer and I hope that he keeps going the same way...!!! Raina also did a wonderful job yesterday. Normally I am very critical of him. But he rose to the occasion and played well and did not give away his wicket... Hope that he can keep up the good work as well...
Hoping to see a wonderful Semi Final...

The best match? I think there were at least 4 matches that were far more interesting. The tie between India and England, New Zealand vs Pakistan, England vs South Africa and the Ireland vs England match.
Raina played the most significant cameo role in this match. Sehwag seems to be injured and unfit. If that is true then Pathan should come infor the semis and finals.Asia will claim the world cup.

Dear Moksha,
All the other matches that you mentioned were excellent. Ireland and Bangladesh pulling an upset over England. England managing a tie against India. South Africa defeating India in the last over... But then they were league matches and almost all the big teams were sure to qualify into the quarter finals.
India Australia matches have always been high tension matches because of the spirit they have been played under. India some how have raised themselves off late when it has come to playing the Australians. And plus it is now the knock outs and that anxiety always elevates the pressure on the players and the audience.
All these reasons made this match the best one for me.... The good news is it will only get better...!!!
