Looking for a job.. Why can't I find one..

March 25, 2011 3:45am CST
I resigned last January to start a new career.. Two months had passed, I'm still jobless.. I am an engineer by profession but work as technical support in a call center.. Now, I am lost.. I wanted to pursue my career as engineer but i think it's too late.. I really hope it's not.. Most of the jobs for engineers are requiring years experience which I don't have.. I don't know what to do. I am currently brushing up on different engineering topics and familiarizing myself on how to use AutoCAD. I am not sure if I'm doing the right thing.. Should I work again in a call center since it's the easiest way for me to get another job. Can you give me advised.. I am hopeless..

I'm sorry for your situation. I'm in the same boat myself. I don't really even care what kind of job I find, but I can't seem to find any. If I were you, I'd go back to working at a call center at least until you can find something better. I can't even find that, yet. Well good luck.

Your on a positive many many people are right now because of the bad economy. I'm sure you've heard it a thousand times by now. Sorry you can't find a job, keeping looking for one that you really want as an engineer and maybe you can search for any other jobs, such as in the call center, until you can find another job that you really want to do.

You need to support yourself. So any job is good for that. As you can get and have experience with call center jobs go ahead and work there. While working there be on the look out for an entry level job in a good company. Not every company looks for experienced engineers. Your effort in learning ACAD is a good idea so carry on with it. No, you are not hopeless, only a bit worried. You are young and so you are in a hurry. Have patience and you will certainly be successful. Don't give up just yet.

Hi Michaelah! I don't think it is too late. I had been in the same boat before. I am an accountant by profession and I was in sales for the last 4 years until I decided to quit when I had a miscarriage from work-related stress. It wasn't easy looking for a job in my hometown, specially there are fresh graduates to compete with. It took me about 6 months before deciding to go to Manila to look for a job. I really would like to go back to practice and I think being in sales didn't actually raise my marketability. So I had a hard time going back to my profession. Fortunately I have a husband who supported me when I was jobless. Anyway, I got a job after a month but not without rejection of course. I have been to companies that were hesitant to hire me because of my lack of knowledge in automated accounting system. Fortunately I was given the opportunity to have experience in those and I was really happy I am back to my track. I have regrets in the past that I should have chosen those jobs that can help me achieve my goal. Unfortunately being in a country where unemployment rate is high, you can only choose the ones available to you, not necessarily aligned to your field, so you can immediately help your family. I think you can keep your call center job to sustain yourself while trying to surf for employment related to your study. Have a look-out for seminars in topics related to your field. Once you can find a suitable job for you, then you can quit your call center job. Just don't lose hope. Keep on trying!

Why did you quit your job without any assurance of a next one? If you could go back in the call center for a while and take necessary trainings that would update your skill related to your course that would be great. Technical courses such as engineering and IT needs constant updates on skills and trainings. If you've acquired some then maybe your chances of finding a job related to your profession would be higher.

Got your point.. I have realized it already.. The thing is i can't even do self study with my previous job not even search for internship.. My previous job always consume me. I worked more than 12 hours a day and even when I'm at home I am still worrying about my responsibilities. I am workaholic. All i can do after my work is sleep.. It was my choice and was suffering from it..

It seems you are on the right track by brushing up on your skills. But I would consider going back to the call center as back up. Now, that doesn't mean giving up on your dream job. While you are working at the call center, you can still look for other work. Mail resumes out daily. Do searches online for places that are hiring inexperienced engineers. Another option is check with temp/employment agencies. They may have a way for you to get your foot in the door. You may also consider doing a internship. With the economy today, some companies will not even take the time to interview unemployed people. No matter how qualified you are. This was recently in the New York Times, CNN and other local news. http://www.usatoday.com/money/economy/2011-02-16-job-application_N.htm

Well, in today's economy it is Very hard to find any type of job. Especially without the experience that they are requiring and a lot of times most places will often only want to hire someone that is already working somewhere knowing that they are dedicated with wanting to be there. Personally I am in a Call center type of position myself and wish I was somewhere else, but for now, until something better comes along I am where I am at. Your best bet might be to try and get a Call center job again and then once you are working again try for another job but stay there until something better comes along.

Yes you should brush up on your AutoCAD and remain working in call center when you do so. After a while you could start looking for jobs in engineering field. I wish you good luck !

It seems like you are doing what you can and should. Two months is not too long to be searching in the grand scheme of things and I know many who take up to six months to find a new one that is what they want. Keep applying and working hard and you will get what you are hoping for.

Hi Michael, I think you should go back to working at call centre again. Keep on working in this sector unless you find a new job in the field you pursue. You need to keep yourself financially active until you find the job you aspire for. Hope this will help. God Bless!
