hi friends.being bored,i went again to check some statistics about the role of captains in leading their team to victory so here i go. Clive Lloyd 1975: 5 matches; 3 innings; 158 runs with one hundred and a fifty with an astonishing strike rate of 105. Clive Lloyd 1979: 4 matches; 3 innings; 123 runs with only one fifty.not surprising considering Sir viv and gordon were going all gund blazing. Kapil Dev 1983: 8 matches;8 innings; 303 runs with one hundred with a strike rate of 109. 12 wickets with an average of 20. Allan Border 1987: 8 matches ; 8 innings;183 runs with one fifty.no idea how he won.must be something to do with boones, marsh and jones. Imran Khan 1992: 8 matches ; 7 innings; 185 runs with one fifty and 7 wickets. Arjuna Ranathunga 1996: 6 matches ; 6 innings; 241 runs with an average of 120 and a strike rate of 119. Steve Waugh 1999: 10 matches; 8 innings; 398 runs with one hundred and 2 fifty and also 3 wickets. Ricky Ponting 2003: 11 matches; 10 innings; 415 runs with 2 hundred and a fifty.remember the ton in the final? Ricky Ponting 2007: 11 matches; 9 innings; 539 runs with one hundred and 4 fifties. and now ? 2011: the two probable teams are srilanka and india.lets see the captains. Kumar Sangakara: 6 matches ' 6 innings; 363 runs with one hundred and 2 fifties. MS Dhoni: 7 matches;6 innings; 125 runs with no hundred or fifty. so far only 2 captains under-performed and won the cup will it be the third time where an non-performing captain will lift the trophy for india or will contributing captain lift the cup for srilanka?

What about Dhoni's keeping and the partnerships with the bat? How many catches , run outs and stumpings? Dhoni, like Clive Lloyd has a great batting side and comes into bat at no.6 or 7. He is one of the floaters and can change his game according to the situation. He can very easily claim a no.5 spot but in the interest of the team he has placed his faith in out of form players like Yuvi and Raina and allowed them to come before him. India is lucky to have a captain like him who has managed to keep himself fit and does not have a back up wicket keeper. what more do you expect from him? His most important contribution is he allows his team mates their space and along with his coach keeps the team united and hungry for a win. His role is the most important. Just give the captaincy to Sachin, Sehwag or Yuvi and you will see the results. See what has happened to Ponting's Australia, he was given a champion side by Waugh and the team has come down albeit slowly. Good captains are very important and right now Indians have the best captain ever better than Ganguly and Pataudi. Only Dravid was more selfless.

thats a valid point. i went and checked and found dhoni was involved in 3 40+ partnerships. ok lets go by each and ever sentence. true dhoni is captaining a team which is overflowing with batsmen.does that mean he should take it easy with his batting skill? even yusuf has hit 2 century and one alsmot match saving 70 coming after dhoni.then why can't Dhoni? being a floater and changing the course of the game.you are right.he did change the game but that was way too long ago. remember the last time dhoni batted india to victory.you should go a year back. these days he is changing the course in favor of the opposition team with the poking stuff. lol.seems everytime dhoni shows faith in someone, they dont stay in the team long like jadeja, chawla and even raina for a while. now why should i care about how he doing with the team off the field and during practice? thats why gary is in the team to do all those motivational stuffs. if dhoni is only good with these motivational stuff and keeping the team united,he could do that by being the assitant coach. what we want is to do it on the field. as for captaincy, sachin failed earlier because he expected his team to perform at his level which is almost impossible.he did score well during his captaincy. no one has ever found anything wrong with sehwag's captaincy.he just didn't like it. as for yuvi,he was never the captain and wont mind it now. good point concerning ponting.he was given a good team. try saying honestly that india will remain in the top 3 in test cricket if sachin, dravid and laxman decide to hang up their boots? similar with ponting.you can't replace hayden, gilly, mcgrath or warne. how long will it take to get dhoni in ponting position since our main men are alreayd pushing 37? never ever compare dhoni with ganguly and pataudi. the man paid the price for his honest outspoken comments.better be a boot-licker.

Dhoni si not taking it easy , the batting surplus is making things easy for him. But he is not out of form, that is good. People have to be given chances and failures do happen, imagine if Chawla and Jadeja had utilized the chances given. Raina has shown the hunger whereas Yusuf is missing out. Our bowling would have been more attacking had Jadeja and Chawla succeeded. Dhoni is a leader and has the guts to comment about bad performance and bad behavior. Sreesanth was one example, he was told to behave. He also told his middle order to not play fancy shots to please the crowd. That was after the loss to SA. Never ever compare to Pataudi and Dada, why? Are they Gods? When Dhoni finishes you will realize what he has achieved.Anyway your reaction on this is emotional so you can stick to your view ihave no issues. Ponting is guilty of being arrogant and abrasive. He had alocol dependency problems much earlier in his career and is known to be volatile and reactive. If you speak the truth then there is a point in being outspoken but Ponting is not above board and is known to fight and whine and complain when things don't go his way. India will be in the top 3 when the trio retires but may slip a notch or two, that si acceptable because those shoes are too big to fill at short notice. But then the three are fading away gradually and replacements will have the time to fill in adequately. Pujara,Rohit,Vijay will measure up in good time. Dhoni is firm and stands by his boys like he has done with Chawla, Ashwin,Yuvi. He is no boot licker and has openly castigated his senior players when needed. Dhoni will definitely coach but that will have to wait.A captain has to act like a coach and he is more than qualified to be a good coach but that will have to wait for quite some time.

seems our debate on whether he is inform or not, will never be over. try explaining why chances were given to chawla and jadeja when no many had any idea why they are in the team? bringing chawla out of the blue into a major tournament when he is out of the team for almost 2 years? explain... what WAS the role of jadeja in the team? a bowler who can bat a bit or a batsmen who can bowl a bit? because he bowled econimically when he was suppose to bat out of situations. thats not i call giving chances to people.it is plaing adamant about his choice. why no other chance was given to sree when 3 chances were given to chawla? he is out spoken and even i was surprised when he given those statement and thinking our captain has got backbone. pataudi and dada may not be gods to you but for many they are. the thing i said about being outspoken.i meant it for dada and not ponting. and ofcourse i see you sidestep some of my other questions too (for doubts check again ) as for emotional,i am an india,i love cricket .do the math.the answer will probably emotional.

Ok, here are a few more things, Clive Lloyd in 1975 scored the century in the final just like Ponting in 2003. Allan Border 1987 was something like Dhoni of now, masterminding a group of players to play like a team and he had that secret weapon called Steve Waugh, whose dibbly dobblers played a critical role in the team's success. Arjuna Ranatunga should be credited for unleashing the mayhem at the start with Kalu and Jayasuriya opening. Steve Waugh in 1999 is also credited with the most damaging sledge when he told Herschelle Gibbs that he has dropped the world cup when he dropped Waugh in the crucial match against South Africa. Of course, Waugh went on to score the fighting century to secure the crucial win for the Aussies. I just checked the stats and in the list of batting wicket keepers in this world cup, Dhoni comes 10th in the list!! I think his claim to success if India wins would be of unleashing Ashwin at the right moment!! Cheers! Ram

Actually he surprised me by throwing the ball to Sachin in the quarters against the Aussies. Cheers! Ram

Hi stardustcdsd, it was quite a good analysis done by you, good job. As far as statistics are concerned there are both under performing and performing captains. So we cannot say which team is going to lift the championship, it is very difficult. Now the fourth quarter final is in progress, and still England is batting , though they have scored only 221 runs by now, but given the matches they have played so far in the tournament one cannot rule them out. they still can win the match and outplay Srilankans. then dhoni only will be left to win the cup. I feel Dhoni has greater chance to win in this world cup.

what are you trying to prove, India will not win this cup! surely dhoni is not performing well, and all you have pointed out is that captain plays well when team wins the cup. but history should be kept aside, otherwise there is no thrill in watching cricket, and history will be broken here. you have pointed out alan border, thats the hope for india, smae way, what happened with border we have sachin, viru and yuvi in the team to perform. and till now no team have won the world cup in their on soil, sothat history is also against us. anyway lets hope that the passt history will be kept apart and indian team willwrite new history.

not like that. lets assume india and srilanka makes it to the finals. if india has sehwag and sachin for opening, they have thranga and dilshan doing a very good job. india has a somewhat underperforming middle order except for yuvi and gambhir. same with srilanka.except for sangakara and mahela, the rest is weak. they have a better bowling side with 5 main bowlers while india has 3 performing bowler,a performing part-timer in yuvi and what-i-am-going=to-do bowler in munaf. so pretty much they are same. heck when comparing captains, its neck to neck. yeah in india we do have a hype about dhoni's midas touch but not many in international arena will say that sanga is a bad captain. so what will decide the main one? the captain form which goes in a long way helps the team rather than hope for others to perform. thats why this discussion.

Stardust At the top you have gambhir and kohli after the openers, that is a plus. lower down you have yuvi, dhoni and raina. if Bhajji performs with the bat even tail becomes effective.Ashwin is no rabbit with the bat. In bowling Sachin, Raina and Sehwag can do what Yuvi si doing and that what Dhoni is going to do in the remaining matches.Munaf and Nehra may sit out the remaining matches. But all the seamers will be trying their best to get into the team. Dhoni is not out of form , if Ponting could score a ton Dhoni can come up with a crucial half century. Lankan bowling is awesome. Herath, Murli, Malinga are great but Murli may be unfit and not play the next one.

Well you did provided a very good statics data and is good to look around it..... But i belive the statics as well as the fact will not do any thing in cricket it the team who play good win and not the paper showing team win Example is 2007 INDIAN team. WE hope to see the who play with his potential wins. Cricket is team work and not depend on performance of indivual but captain has huge role in that.
