i had a good conversation with my friend, she doesn't believe in any religion but she believes in god. while we discussed i tempted to ask her. me : so if u don't believe in any religion, what is your source for moral standard, usually religious person uses holy book as their source??? my friend : well, god give me a mind and heart, so i use my ethic which is i have to be flexible person and respect to the society's culture where i live and i can do everything i want as long as it's not give a negative effect to the others... so Moral Standard based on what????

if you ask me, morality doesn't necessarily come from religion. all that's needed is just plain common sense. if it's effects are beneficial, then it must be good. otherwise, it's not. the holy books you mentioned are just written observations from earlier people. it is found out that it brings about good effects, so eventually, it has become the standard for most religious organizations. you could rely to aesop's fables, brother's grimm, mother goose, the arabian nights, and some common books. you will observe that these books convey a lesson or two. and these MAY be some sources of moral standards.
