does anyone else confuse oz with fl oz?

I have a recipe that calls for 8 oz of peanut butter. Is peanut butter measured in fl oz or oz? I know fl oz is fluid ounces, and measures volume while oz measures weight right? But how do you measure things that are in between fluid and solid?

Whenever I make something like PB Cookies I use a measuring cup for solids not liquids. I've never honestly thought about the fact that pb is kind of in a grey area perhaps but I think it's considered a solid. Just like shortening can be measured by pre-measured stick form or you can buy it in a tub and put it in a measuring cup for solids.... though I think it would be easier to use measuring wise in stick form.

I'm also quite confused when I first read your question. But as I've read it again and again. I had already an answer oz is for solid stuff wherein it can be hold by our hands while fl oz is for Liquid. But when it is in solid it can me grams or milligrams.

Hi sashakiddo, I use the metric sistem, as well as most of the world, but, for what I can remember about the british sistem, unless is especified as fluid ounce, (fl oz), it refers to ounces. If you are seeing the recipe from a book, it is probable there is a chart of convertion of ounces to grams, in there, and maybe there is specified when to read oz, instead of fl oz.

This is a great question. I've always used just oz. I've never taken in to consideration there could be another alternative. Looks like I will be doing some research. Best Wishes!
