What are the kinds of birdfeeders and birdfood you use?

I'm interested in getting some new things that will attract a variety of birds, have you had any good experiences with a particular type of feeder and food. For some reason I seem to only attract sparrows, not that they don't need to eat as well but I'm hoping to get a few different kind of birds as well. I'm interested in learning more about how those of you who are successful at drawing birds around do it. I've tried attracting hummingbirds too but can't seem to draw any around if you have any good ideas for that too I would appreciate it. Thanks

I have a few varieties of wild birds that come into my yard, such as blue jay's, robins, quail, owls, hawks, and those little black birds that look like miniature crows. LOL I even get hummingbirds. Out of them all, the only ones I feed are the hummingbirds. I just use a regular hummingbird feeder with hummingbird nectar. The nectar, which is in premade bottles, can be found at places like Wal-Mart. The hummingbirds absolutely love it!

Sparrows come around my house quite often, depending on the weather conditions of course. Birds have a good sense of the weather. I use rice to feed them and keep them coming. Looks to me they get addicted to eating rice. I see them enjoying picking up rice when I spray it around them.

I get mostly sparrows and finches since I moved into town, but when I lived in the country, there were so many types of birds I couldn't even list them. When I fed birds there, I used the top of an old three foot stump and it attracted almost everything. I can't do that here because of feral cats and squirrels, so I have a squirrel proof feeder and that won't allow bigger birds to eat. It's good as far as the crows and blackbirds go, but no bluejays or anything else.
I think it depends on where you are as well as the kind of feeder. I have always fed mixed grain, no corn, but sunflower seeds and a couple of different kinds of millet/milo mostly. All birds love sunflower seeds and the millet is often wasted.
If you have a place that's safe from cats and squirrels, put out sunflower seeds and see what happens.
