Texting Has Ruined Me!

I used to be the sharpest girl in class when it comes to spelling out words even the more challenging ones. Since the boom of cellphones, though, I have noticed my spelling skills fading into oblivion and this all started when I learned how to text. I remember first learning how to text back in high school about 10 years ago. (Ugh! I'm ooold!) That was the biggest fad then as it still is now. It was so exhausting to spell out an entire word especially the longer ones in a particularly long text message. Hence, the invention of the shortened words and acronyms whose meanings I have yet to master. Enter my chronic problem of spelling. Gone is my knack of knowing which letter should go to which part of the word. I am no longer sure of myself whenever my younger sisters ask me about it. Many times have I sent messages to my friends asking for help about the spelling of even the most common words, whether a certain word has two R's, or another has an S or two, or whether E comes after I, which has amused them to no end. Technology is good but it comes with a price. I'm grateful for whoever has invented cellphones but for me, texting had ruined me. Anyone else finding themselves in the same predicament?

I've never been the best speller, but yes your discussion is completely true. A lot of people are lacking their spelling capabilities through texting. For instance my teacher gave her students an example that one of her students emailed her with the word "you" spelled "u" lol. I even caught myself doing this in a research paper. I can laugh at it now, because I learned my mistakes. I do proofread my papers. But sometime when you know what you already written word/mistakes can be overlooked. So now when I text I text the words out now.

I'm trying my hardest to do that as well, spelling out the entire word when texting but still there are times when I would not even notice that I've misspelled the word until later. More practice would help a lot, I'm sure. And yes, I have also sent "U" instead of "YOU" to a teacher. Good thing she didn't mind it so much. Thanks for the post!

We're in the same boat which is why I try not to use short cuts anymore...

I have been doing that lately as well. Sometimes, though, I still catch myself using the shorter forms of words. Thank you for posting!

I feel the same,. Making school projects, reports, thesis,. Most of the error are spellings. Especially in writing skills. Of course, with the habit of texting we don't notice that we are getting used to the spellings we use in texting rather than what is grammatically correct.

I agree. Even after I proofread my some of my work in the end I still find myself overlooking one or two spelling errors. Thanks for posting!

To a certain extent yes. I have to catch myself more and more each day because I am finding that normally I can write/type exactly how my brain thinks so many times the shortcuts want to creep through and I feel like my brain is getting lazy because of the texting features.

That's the word I was looking for. Lazy! I have been trying to look for a word that would best describe my brain function with this problem. It really is much easier and faster when one would use the shortened versions or the words. Thanks for posting!

This things are becoming a usual habit especially with teenagers right now.,hopefully the school where are they in with can make it a point by giving some rules regarding this short method of writings what am I saying is that if they would continue with this habit maybe in the future no one from their generation can spell a certain word in its correct form on how to spell the word.,Lets put it this way.,this kind of problems is not really a big issue but if they would not break this habit this would become a major problem in the future..a big fire comes from a small smoke...

I agree. This might turn out to become a permanent thing among kids especially since they are still very much easily influenced upon at this stage. I mean, it has gotten its effect on me and I've long since graduated from college. How much more from them. Thanks for posting!

Same with me, I used to be really good at spelling and I'm not anymore, I wonder if it's because the texting? Hmm never thought of that. Good point.

I used to be an avid reader of a wide range of books which helped me with my spelling but I haven't done much of that recently so I guess that could also be a reason why I'm aren't as sharp as I used to. However, I really feel that it was texting that did it since I have been so used to it for almost a decade now. I could also say that I MIGHT be inherently dull but I wouldn't LOL Thanks for posting!

Not really. I know how to separate texting composition from writing composition. Some text words have been very popularly used like OMG, LOL and FYI that the Oxford English Dictionary have already included them in their on-line listing. I only use text words whenever I use my cellphone. But I pretty much know the spelling of words. I have Mylot to thank for as I can practice the English language here more often. Why don't you try being at Mylot more often?

Same with me, I think it has to do with cellphones as well. I think after this year, I'm getting rid of my cell :D my friends think I'm crazy but No, I've just gotten too comfortable depending on technology.
