Why some do it, then get help

"The family of another convicted Filipino drug trafficker seek's the government's help." 
It has been aired in th news that three Filipinos will be executed in China for drug trafficking and now one Filipino was arrested last 2008 for bringing in 1.495 kilos of heroin hidden in his luggage.
I was just wondering, why would they seek help if in the first place they did it with their full knowledge that it's illegal?
I'm a Filipino, but when it comes to stupidity, I'm a no-no.
They know IN THE FIRST PLACE that what they did was wrong so they should have enough pride to admit it and not to ask some help. 
Okay, I'm getting bad to my fellows but, I just can't help to get irritated. 
What's your opinion about this?
