To all Techie Mylotters: What is the difference between iphone and an android?

This goes to all Techie Mylotters. what is the difference between an iphone and an android phone? I am planning to replace my phone with a new one. I am planning to purchase an iphone but my colleague who is an android phone user told me to try android phones instead. Which do you guys prefer? I will base my decision for purchasing from your opinions. :)
