While not all free items are really cheap and there would be a hitch somewhere, I find that this ‘free’ offer given in one particular departmental store near my place ‘Sahakari Bandar’ is very good.. Do you have any store nearby that gives such attractive offers? What do you think of such offers? Please do share your views.

Sometimes these offers are genuine and great bargains where at other times , I find that I don't really need them but end up buying too. Maybe on impulse or because of the get one free clause.

Yes.Taht was what I was writing in my previous comment too. At tiems, they are good; but for perishable items we cannot buy and stock them.

Hi Dear Kalav! I am also from India! We have many departmental stores like Big Bazaar, Spencers etc which have some or other type of free schemes! Initially I used to get interested in this type of schemes but now I am not really keen on thm any more. If you look at the cost of two items they would work out more or less similar to the price of individual items if we get from other places. Generally such schemes are given on the items which don't have a fixed price from the Company which manufactures it.These items normally include ready made clothes, Sweaters, undergarments, socks etc., where it is really difficult to know the actual price of the product! If the scheme is there on some edibles like I have seen with cold drinks, ten either they must be having the expiry date close by or they must be wanting to finish the stock before the season! I have got many friends, who are businessmen! they always say only one thing that no business man would pay any thing from his pocket to the client at any time.He is basically opened a shop to make money and not to do a charity! I always keep this thing in my mind and now a days I don't get keen any more with these sort of schemes! Thanks !

Yes, I think some times we get new product get introduced in the market and to promote these product company launches some schemes .Here we not only get the product at cheaper rates but the quality of the products is also good! This is specially applicable to Soaps, Shampoos and Tooth pastes! I have tried these things some time ago and I found it works for me! Thanks !

Absolutely right. But, occasionally, we get bargains too where we get fresh biscuits with bargain deals or sauce or chips at bargain prices. CLothes are a risky affair because one cannot guarantee the durability of these offers because nothing is ever really cheap in this world.

I think the buy one get one free offer is absolutely terrfic! I have also noticed that some supermarkets are now offering buy one get two free! How ridiculous does that sound? It's true though. I think it's good to find these bargains if you can as you are saving yourself a fair amount of money. I think virtually everyone loves a bargain or two. Where I live I have a Morrison's store and I don't know whether you are familiar with that store but they do offer a lot of these buy one get one free offers and I do like to have a browse around the shelves from time to time to see what is on offer. I don't like shopping all the time but I think there are some things you just have to attend to and one of them is securing a good bargain or two! Andrew

Any discount and free offers are good if they are from directly factory outlet itself. Factory outlet if you didnt know is a shop/store right next to the factory, it saves all the cost regarding transportation, retailer and such thus being able to give decent amount of discount. Any other huge discounts has to have something fishy in it. Nothing in this world comes for free.

I am always a happy shopper to see a bargain. The word free attached to any sale just seems to vall out my name. Sometimes they are worth grabbing. When they aren't then I am left with nothing but disappointment.

If you really need the product, that kind of 'bargain is good. I mean, it's awesome that you go to the supermarket to get stuff, and you see that you can get some of that stuff for free! But if you think for a while, such big companies wouldn't be making those offers if they weren't profitable for them. With those bargains, they can get your attention, and lead you into buying a product you don't need. E.g., you go to a supermarket to buy apples, but you get there and you see that there's a 'buy one, get one free' offer for yogurts. You take those yogurts, thinking that you are saving money. But actually, you aren't. If that offer didn't exist, you would've bought only the apples, and 0 yogurts. But because they had the offer, you took the apples and two yogurts. Even if you only paid for 1 yogurt, they still won money for having that offer.

Very true. I am a very discerning buyer and am also called a salesman's 'nightmare' at home. I will pick only thing s if I need them and if I do not need a product I heartlessly say 'even if you give it totally free I don't want it' when someone knocks at my door and pesters me. Big stores do it for their turn over and if the offer is soemthing we like then it is beneficial to both.

Sometimes, offers like that are deceiving. They might think that they can fool all people. Take for example, a buy one take 1 burger being offered in our city. When you try to calculate the cost per burger the cost will still be the same as when you buy one burger. At least you get to buy only 1, which is what you can only eat! How i wish they could really offer something that could help the people to spend less for value!

Many times we get good value for our money in this store I had mentioned. EVen biscuits that are fresh, cleaning liquids and soaps, dusters , nightdresses ,towels are offered like that. THey do it for higher turnover and it is beneficial to both.

I totally love these kinds of bargains. I must admit that it sometimes gives a false feeling of satisfaction when you have purchased two items for the price of one. The price hardly changes, you might notice afterwards! However, what I've noticed is that it's a good choice 99% of the time. As a student myself, I really have to make sure I don't spend too much money on items. If I can get something for free... Then I think to myself "Yay!". :)

This selling method works for me:) I know actually it is a trick from the seller. However, this selling method seems to be attractive since I can get one free. Usually the big supermarket will have such kind of promotion. This is why I like going shopping there. I love China

Hi dear, I think it is become a common trend now in most of the stores are providing something free along with the product. We got free packet of Tide washing powder (100 gm) as free along with the Surf excel washing powder. Tooth brush is free with tooth paste. Note book is free with 4-1 packet of bathing soap, mug is free with kid’s growth powder, another packet of fruit jam is free with Jam bottle, so the list is endless. Now my younger son also started to ask if he sees some new product, do you get this free. They too attracted with the toys packed in their favorite snack’s packet. Sometimes it become a nuisance, as a parents we don’t want to provide those stuffs to kids but they are watching in day care, other kids are eating and playing with toys so demand the same at home just for those tiny toys. I agree, providing free stuffs, is a marketing technique from sales people. It has its own advantage and disadvantages. I don’t believe that ‘buy one and get one free’ stuffs in case of dress materials, they may be old, as they wanted to clear the stuff. So it depends on the product, some are safe and but some are not safe. I will give you an example, recently I purchased a jam bottle and I got one free, where I noticed that the price is higher than usual, it means they are charging the price of both bottle in one. I hope you got my point. As a customer point of view we don’t have any loss and mentally we are happy on getting one free. On the other side they too are happy to sell two bottles at one time without any loss. Normally nobody bothers that much and analyse the profit as a customer.

Hullo shree! Thanks for participation and that elaborate comprehensive response. When both the customer and the shop owner are happy it becomes a beneficial situation for both. We may be paying slightly more in another shop and if we buy something we need at a lower price we do feel happy. But children getting led by this is a sad thing and it becomes difficult for parents to handle it. It would call for some explanation to the child and he may feel bad and that is unnecessary. But, soaps , tooth paste are good deals .

But, whether we analyze it and find out that they are making profits or not, we would still be happy if it is a 'win'win' situation for both. THe shopkeeper after all, has to have his legitimate profit ; isn't it Shree? I am only against false promises and if a product is available at some good bargain, it is not bad by itself. The shopkeeper goes for a greater turnover with less margins. That is all.

They are just playing the mind game by making customers happy just adding gifts with the products. Ultimately they are making the profit but they are successful to make the customers happy with their promotional methods. A common customer never thinks about who gain and all that when buying products. I have the habit of analyzing the same, because I am a commerce graduate and I studied marketing.

Most of those offers are not reallyoffers at all, but ways that stores have to get rid of unwanted goods. But once in a while, they are intersting, at least for me. I buy knickers every time I go to the US at those places where they will give you either the second pair free or at half the price. I know how much thay cost in my country so I also know whether to buy them or not. If they are exactly what I want AND they are less expensive, they are a bargain for me.

Yes! I have also felt this way--'nothing ca ever be cheap in life and nothing would ever come without a price'. I have found this in even fruits and vegetables. If something looks cheap it would finally end up being more expensive than we bargained for because there would be a heavy wastage caused by rotten things underneath.

buy one get one offer doesn't really as bargain as other people think it was, such cases are either old stocks, not in so much good conditions or they will offer you such instances and when you look at the price it was priced for two.... these market strategy often boom in the market but since i'm a marketing student i know different strategies and styles, so i'm not easily been drowned to such offers, for me it was still quality over quantity.... but if you just like the product then buy it and it's good that you think it will cost you less
@kalav56 (11464)

True.It all depends on our present need for the particualr product and even if the cost is marginally lower, if we need something and we are sure to consume the extra free one, then it is a good deal.

Eatables definitely have this drawback unless you ahve someone else to share them with. There is no point buying things just because they are on offer and if we tend to waste the product, the purpose is defeated.

it's a good deal when you have someone to share the other half of the product... for example me and my friend always eat in BUy ONE TAKE ONE BURGER.... it's a deal that both of us can have one burger, cause you can't buy one and if you're alone you have to eat two burger which can make you real full after eating 2 pack for yourself
