Should we kill people to stop them from killing other people?

Many people believe in the death penalty and think of it as a deterrent to violent crime. In other words, they feel that we must kill people in order to get people to stop killing people. Some Christians even like the quote the Bible,"an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth", forgetting perhaps, that Jesus Christ himself condemned this way of thinking. (Matthew 5: 38-39). In more recent times, Mahatma Gandhi said,"An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind" and to paraphrase Albert Einstein, you cannot solve a problem using the same energy that created it. To be truthful, to be plain and clear, isn't it a simple matter of revenge, of evening the score? What are your thoughts?

As life long friends, we have been involved in a horrific situation, one young man went to his best friend's home and shot him 6 times. With a wonder of modern medicine the young man who was shot will survive. Now all of us who have prayed and cried for this family faces the Y in the road of life. The positive side that says forgive and help both these young men toward a better life, or the other side that say revenge, and send the shooter to prison for many years. My take is that none of us know how or why this happened between two friends and that everything that can be done not to ruin these lives should be done. No matter how much the young man shot recovers this will change his life forever and certianly the shooter will never be the same. To me the worse thing would be to continue the energy involved in this situation.

Hi savypat, Of course forgiveness is the answer. It is best to help both young men towards a better life. Revenge is never the answer. Thank you for sharing this. Blessings.

Personally killing people to Stop them from killing other people never solved anything, as who knows what is really going thru someone's mind when they kill someone, and if you go allowing Policemen, etc. to go around killing everyone that goes around shooting someone else, you could start some major Racial riots and tensions if it is white killing black. Personally I think the world has gotten away from the Biblical teachings and Bible and gone it's own way which is actually predicted in the Book of Revelations for the last days. I think personally it is time we go back to being a little more open and understanding and try to help teach godly principles again even in things such as severe crimes and murder.

Hi KrauseHome, Thank you for sharing your thoughts and you're right, Christians need to get back to the teachings of Christ, especially that found in the sermon on the mount. Blessings.

There are certain people who are either in jail who did murder someone -murder not just killing at the spur of the moment, but actually planned to murder that victim and succeeded. These if they escaped out of jail would go and murder again. Now I have yet to see these murderers go to the government and get a license to kill ala James Bond, yet you want us to keep them in jail and have given them a free pass. So no one can give them the appropriate punishment. The only ones who are supposed to execute them are the law. The policeman who arrested the murderer, the prosecuting attorney, and the one that metes out the punishmen t is not allowed to be a member of the victim's family. Oh let me know when the llcense to kill s issued since all the police can do is throw them in prison. Of course, the serial killers, and psychopaths who murder someone in cold blood should be executed. Or do you want them to escape prison and kill someone else?

Well I for one believe on the saying of violence will not stop violence but in some cases this is only the way. There are people in the world unfortunately that have no remorse or even enjoy killing other people. These kinds of people cannot be jailed because they will hurt/kill other prisoners or guards and will be a big problem of the society. I believe that its a case to case basis.
