Do you sing only the songs that relate to you?

I read from somewhere about someone who gets affected of people who sing songs that do not relate to them. She heard a friend singing a song about torn between two lovers and she asked the friend if it is the case with him. The friend vehemently denied. She asked afterwards why he was singing the song and the friend told her he just loves the tune. She finds it absurd. And I find her absurd. Why would it be wrong to sing a song that does not relate to you? That is just a song. If it has a tune or melody that someone finds interesting, then anyone can sing it. A song does not have to necessarily be one that tells about one's life. If that is the case, singers won't be singing good and nice songs that do not relate to them.

I have to agree with you because most times I don't select songs because of the words but more so about the tune and melody. I am a heavy music guru and can say that if that were true then everything I listen and or sing to would be related to me. Which does not make sense. There are many songs I cannot absolutely relate too but find the beat, and or rhythm to be entertaining. There are truly sad songs that I cannot relate to the lyrics but can certainly appreciate the flow of the way the song is sung.

Hi. One help if you can - There was a song on some tv advert here for Vodafone (earlier hutch) in Indian Television. The song went - "You and I in this beautiful world" - searched the net but could not get an idea if this was an Album song or a song done for the Advert. Any idea?

mostly the tune plays a big role, hardworkinggurl. so it doesnt make sense that one will not sing a song because of the lyrics. you are welcome, thesids.

I agree with you a lot! actually sometimes if the song plays on the radio, and then it plays again and then again! I ask you, would you not be able to know the song and I tell you, you will simply gonna sing it too or maybe just hum because you are exposed to it, especially if it is that too catchy! I sometimes do sing songs I don't relate to, but we got past experiences and thats very little circumstances that you haven't been to that kind of stuff that the song sings, so definitely you will still gonna love it.

Actually, I like that song too, and it has nothing to do with me. But I know in the past I have mentioned a song, and somebody has right away assumed that the lyrics have some significance to me when they didn't.

happens all the time, dawnald. it is okay to joke about it but to actually assume is a different thing.

I love singing and hearing songs that I could relate to very much. But, that doesn't mean I can't sing songs that don't. Sometimes, I like songs just because of the melody. So, that wouldn't stop me from singing songs that don't relate to me. I think she's weird, too.

Hi there. I'm a music lover, and music doesn't love me back..hehe.. I pick up songs that loves my ears, the beat, tune and the rythm. Just feel the music, it's not always relating yourself to it. It depends on each and evryone of us on how we can deal with it. There's no harm in loving songs that doesn't relate to you.

indeed, martin. there is no harm. my point exactly. i was reminded of a friend's line that he loves music but music does not love him back, too. his voice is a sort of a monotone.

I'm with you on this one!! It's just a song - it's a catchy tune and maybe even a fun beat... or just a good sounding song! Why not sing? -- thanks though - because now I got that song stuck in my head!!

Dear Ms. Bingskee Quite true but I find that as a corollary. Many a times, our mood gets controlled by the songs that we have been listening and again many a times, we love to listen songs that go with our mood. I find that happening with me at least many a times... When I am in a good mood, I dont want to listen those pathetic numbers that are melancholies and bring a sad feeling... But again, many a times, I find that when I am sad, and I can tune in to a peppy number, I feel better. So I think at end it is not that song but my mood that helps in deciding what is a better song for me at that given moment. Many might disagree but this is quite true and happening with me. Relating a song to me... well, there are some great songs that I understand nothing of them but still the tunes make me feel happy... Examples - I Love Santana and even Enrique, but have no idea what their local language lyrics mean. So It cannot be the meaning of the song... It has to be the tune.... And I can hum those tune - I dont sing

Hello bingskee.. I wonder too why some people would relate it to your life in general. People usually think of this kind when someone is singing a love song. When it's a happy love song, they would say he/she is in-love. And when it's a lonely love song, they would say he/she is broken hearted. When in most cases, people just love to sing or maybe they like the melody of it. But to ask your question if I sing songs that relate to me, well, most of the time NO. For in many times, I just love the tune or it came from my favorite artist or band.

i have heard that comments, too. i had probably jested about it, too. but to seriously think that people sing songs because they relate to the singer is just not right. it is not true all the time.
