Who is responsible for knowing your gift card balance, you or the cashier?

I went to CVS today with my boyfriend and I had 3- Giftcards to use, those 3 had different prices on them because I've used them each a few times, one had about $8 bucks, $15 bucks & $20 bucks but I don't know which is which because I got confused.
We spent about $30 bucks and the lady swiped the 3 cards and tossed it in the trash, she expected me to pay the difference or something. I told her I'm not sure how much is in each but I know the total of the 3.
She said okay.
She swiped the first card $15, tossed it, $8 tossed it & $20 tossed it.
Then, I was like well, where is my change? She's like you're supposed to tell me you had money left.
What? That isn't my duty. She's the cashier- she is supposed to see if I have money left. If she did that to everyone, she would rip people off!
Who do you think is responsible?

I got my gift card back but she was like you're supposed to keep track of your own balance which is stupid but I got my gift card back, had like $8 bucks left! Money is money.

I whould have told her..."I did keep track of my own balance...that is why I am asking for change. You were trying to steal my change!" and then I'd called for the manager.

Yeah she was pretty stupid.
She swiped, tossed immediately in the trash can, gave me my receipt. She tried to rip me off.

SHe can't do that. The cards get swiped and it comes off your balance. Anything that is on the cards over your current purchase balance...stays there for you to use it again. The odds of it coming out even like that are so slim...to non existant. What she probably did was swipe it, tell you it took it all, dumped your card and then expected you to believe her and leave, then she'd dig the last card out of the trash and use it herself.
I've done GC's alot and literally had some where it had less than a dollar on it after my purchase so the only thing that is "your duty" is to take your cards back...don't let the cashier toss them. You can call the number on the back and see the balance. It is hard to remember how much on a card, especially if you've used some of it. When I use mine, I had it to her and then watch the screen to see what it taken off and what is left of the balance. If I hae another card..I hand it to her then. I do this just simply cause i don't remember what's on each one PLUS...cashiers these days don't know how to make change or count money...so I watch my money for myself.

A gift card we receve is often treated in the same way that cash is. it should not be left up to the cashier to know what our gift card balance. that is a responsibility that should be ours to have.@infatuatedbby (94909)

Gift card is cash but you don't swipe the card and toss it in the trash. Most likely there will be cash remaining.
It is our responsibility to know how much but I had 3, I told her to check.
