Do You Cook?

I've always enjoyed cooking. My Husband presents a challenge for me, because he is so fussy about certain foods. He loves Italian food, but not sauces made using cream as a base. He loves Spicy food, which I hate, so sometimes, cooking for us both presents me with a bit of a challenge. Recently, I started looking for Recipes online, and trying them out. Since then, my husband has discovered that he does in fact like Scones, and Apple Crumble lol. I like to find recipes that I think will be easy to make, and then graduate to ones that seem a little more challenging. A couple of weeks ago, I was talking to a friend about clotted cream, and figured I should have a try at making my own strawberry Jam. I discovered that I can, in fact, make it, but I also discovered that I need bigger pots to make it in, and more jars wouldn't go amiss either. I gave a jar of the Jam to a friend, and one for him to give to his mom too. So far, both have said they liked it which put a smile on my face. If I'd known how easy it was to do, I would have tried making it much sooner. Right now, I have a thing going for desserts. Tomorrow night we will be trying a Butterscotch Pudding for dessert. I haven't tried the recipe out before, so if it goes wrong, we'll be going without lol. Do you cook? What puts you off trying a new recipe? What makes you want to try a new recipe? What sort of food do you enjoy cooking?

Hello misplacedbrit, nice to meet you. Yes I do cook, but it has been a long time since I really tried. The fact is that we are staying with my in-laws and my mother in law does all the cooking. I try sometimes to cook something but end up not being so "perfect" and then............................................... I will be cooking someday, but as far as I know, I am a very very very bad cook. Really I remember trying to back those chocolate chip cookies but it turned out to be some brown sugar-more egg- uneatable type cookies. Turn out I have got used to it. The only thing that people recommend me to back/make is microwave brownies.

It's interesting that so many people assume they must be very bad cooks if they try something that doesn't turn out very nice, or even perfect the first time they try it. With cooking, failure just means you pick yourself back up, and try something new. With time comes confidence and patience.

Glad to hear your story about cooking. I am an undergraduate college student in China and I don't cook for myself (honestly , I cannot). My favorite food is fried eggs with tamatoes. I couldn't survive with it~~~ Also ,as a Chinese girl, I love dumplings very much. Wow , I wanna eat right now, could please cook for me ? Muhaha , thanks anyway.

Lol, unfortunately, I can't cook for you. Vancouver is a little too far away from China. However, should you come visit Vancouver, I would be happy to make a little something for you :-) Cooking really isn't all that difficult. Find a recipe, buy the ingredients and get stuck in there. You don't know what you can or can't do unless you try :-)

Hello there, Brit....why are you misplaced? Yes, I cook and I love it. I have one main meal a day and make everything from scratch. I don't see the sense of buying convenience and prepackaged foods/meals when I have most everything I need right here in my kitchen. I think it's cheaper to cook this way. I reference several online cooking/recipe sites for every kind of cooking that I do. I also have an old (+75 yrs) recipe box that one of my aunts left behind. She made the best pecan pie and refrigerated fruitcake that I've ever had. I prefer finding recipes that have photos attached so I will know what I am aiming for but most of the time I can just read over a recipe and know what it is. So it really doesn't matter too much about the photos. I cook any and every thing that strikes my fancy. This varies from day to day. I get email updates from the cooking sites and if a recipe looks good to me, I'll prepare it within a short period. Just today I chased down a recipe for a homemade chocolate pudding and I'll probably be putting that together before the week end.

Hi there. I call myself misplacedbrit because I was born and raised in the UK, but have spent the last several years living in Western Canada. :-) I too prefer recipes with photos, especially if I'm trying something for the first time, so I have some idea of what the end result is supposed to look like, but if I've made it before, I'm not so bothered about whether there's a picture or not. I think it's wonderful that you have a recipe box that your aunt left behind. Some of those old recipes beat the rest hands down! Unfortunately, my grandmother wasn't much of a one for cooking, so I never got to have that experience. I agree with you about buying prepackaged food. There's just no point to it, and they often contain ingredients that don't do us a whole lot of good too. I started up my own blog just a little while ago. I decided that I'd use it to put recipes in it that I'd tried, and how the results turned out. That way, I can find a recipe that I liked if I want to try it again, and I'll also know what we didn't like so much. That chocolate pudding sounds DIVINE! Lol, I can't wait to make the butterscotch pudding tomorrow :-)

Hi there! Maybe you could cook a meal for your parents one day? They might discover something new that they like, and you get to show off your cooking skills. Cooking is a very enjoyable past-time. I enjoy mixing the ingredients, and tasting the finished product. It passes the time, and most times you don't even realize how much time has gone by.

Cooking isn't as hard as you might think. Try buying a recipe book with some simple recipes in it and start there. Once you gain a little bit of experience and a little more confidence, move on to some more challenging recipes. Once you start, I guarantee that you'll never buy food already cooked at the store. Home made food tastes SO much better!

I love to try cooking new things and seeing how the finished product will turn out. If it works well, I store the recipe and then try to think about how I can change it the next time to make it even better.

I love cooking. I would try new recipes I've seen in tv or a new recipe I saw in the internet. I'm not afraid to try new things. You wouldn't know until you've tried. I'm just glad that there are easy recipes of dishes that seemed complicated to cook. The easiest for me to cook is pasta. I love pasta! I haven't tried cooking Chinese cuisine yet. Just looking at the list of the ingredients makes me raise an eyebrow.

Yes I like to cook all the time but I am not the greatest cook in the world he he he but they say practice makes perfect right? Some things I can cook very well and others not so well but I don't give up! It is nice to hear that you put a smile on your husband and mothers face that is a good thing! Keep cooking and learning I know sometimes it is a pain when we are tired but we have to make the ones we love happy. Have a good day!

I don't think it matters whether we cook well or not. As you say, practice does make perfect. There are a few things that I can make with my eyes closed because I've done it so many times before. I like to follow a recipe as closely as possible the first time I try something new, then when I taste it, I try and think what would go well with it, and what changes I could make to it the next time I make it. If I'm tired, I try to make something that is easy for me, then I tend to make less mistakes lol. Otherwise, I double check everything in a recipe before I make it, to make sure I have everything I need.

I like to cook but don't do it much lately. My kids are 16 and 18 and rarely home at a normal dinner hour. Some nights we are on the go and grab something outside. On Sunday we eat out for our main meal. When I was married I loved to cook large meals with all different side dishes and desserts but now the kids just are not interested.

I love to cook and I love to watch cooking shows. Jamie Oliver is my favorite cook, and he is british like you! I like to cook mostly sweet things like cakes and cookies, and also breads, every kind of breads, but this is because I have celiac disease and I can't eat anything thing that is sold in a bakery, and here in my country, we don't have many places where sell gluten-free foods. So, I have to make my own sweeties. I've been diagnosed with celiac disease at 11, and since then, my mom had to started to make our food instead of buying, and I've been helping her while cooking all this time. I think that this has developed my love for cooking. I also love to watch Jamie Oliver's shows and try his recipes. I love the way he cooks, and he is really cute too! Someday, I want a husband like him, that cooks to me. LOL :)
