I set up my first business in Zambia at the age of 22. It was an engineering design office making detailed drawings for steel fabrications like microwave towers, steel buildings, mine works and similar. It went very well as there was a shortage of skilled labour in Zambia at that time, and still is for that matter. It was hard work and long hours but the rewards were good even though the payment was in kwacha which was a useless currency outside the country. Then President Kaunda nationalised all companies in Zambia and most of my clients packed up and left. I lost 51% of my company to the government for no payment - only that I would get paid back their 51% of the profits I made! So I left too and a good thing too as the country went into economic collapse soon after. Sad really as it was a lovely country, lovely climate, lovely people on the whole and had good economics before independance.
