Liberals put up or shut up on charities

This past week two "evil men" raised money to help charities. Bill O'Reilly raised over a million dollars for the Fisher House for families of wounded troops. Rush Limbaugh had his yearly telethon for the Blood Cancer Drive and last year he raised over $3 million dollars.
When I used to listen to Public Radio they would have several drives a year trying to raise thousands of dollars and they struggled to meet their goal. Often times Public Radio had to give gifts worth almost as much as the donation to get people to give.
Why doesn't the liberal media hold a fund raiser for Public Radio and Television so that the government doesn't have to fund them and help the budget crisis. The Hollywood stars that think Planed Parenthood is such an important cause why don't they give of themselves and raise money for the program and save tax payers money?
There were several religious social service organizations that were funded by private donations that were threatened by the government to accept gay couples for adoption or lose their tax exempt status. When they choose to shut down rather than go against their values the children were caught in the public system which promoted foster care over adoption.
There are people who favor letting private charities do their work and express their values in doing it. Why do the liberals feel it is so important that values be promoted by the public system and funded by the taxpayer? Why don't they start a charity and support it with their money rather than always looking to the government fund it and run it the way they think it should be run?

I honestly think it's due to the immaturity of most liberals. Deep inside, they're still waiting for Mommy and Daddy to make them feel better. They don't know how to handle life on their own so they think the only way to be secure (for themselves and others) is to give control over to the government.
Immature people are self centered and find it hard to go out of their way even a little bit to help someone voluntarily. It's easier for them to pay someone else (the government) to do it. That soothes their consciences. Being selfish, though, means that they won't do it by themselves; others (taxpayers) have to do it with them.

In a New York Times Column the author wrote that he investigated the giving patterns fo Liberals and Conservatives and found that while Liberals did give to some charities that helped other people most of their money that was given was given to provide support for things they enjoy, such as the Art Gallery, Philharmonic, Opera etc.
That seems to indicate that there is a selfish motive to their giving.

Because the liberals work best with other peoples money obtained to the threat of prison or worse if we don't pay outr taxes.
The other sources you mentioned are voluntary without coercion.
The sources the liberals use are not.

Why don't Planned Parenthood proponents fund it privately!? That is the question--we all know the answer to?--that confuses us all.
I believe it has less to do with organizations like Planned Parenthood and more to do with ideology.
Individuals like Obama and Pelosi and those singing the praises of big-spending government truly believe that America's only a great nation if the government is playing the equalizer.
Having the government "fund" something, as inept as it may be, at least shows the government cares. Big-government dreamers believe that the money is not only endless but also fixes everything immediately.
If only we could keep spending, our problems are solved! We'll just take the wealth from those who have it so that the government--the only body able to properly decide what's fair and what isn't--can fix America.
In my opinion, the difference between big-government nanny-state ideology and self-reliance boils down to theoretical planning and practical application.
20 people on the street, all friends and neighbors, all hard-working individuals willing to look out for one another. If Mrs. Johnson falls on hard times and needs some work done, Mr. Smith and Mr. McHenry and others help out where they can. They strap on their tool belts to fix the floor. They drop off boxes of groceries. They do what they can.
It's practical. It works. But then you have someone who has never done such a thing in his life, never strapped on a tool belt and never actually helped anyone. He thinks he can theorize a way to do it better - more efficient and "fairer."
He petitions to make it law that everyone on the street has to give 30% of their income to put aside to help every Mrs. Johnson that pops up.
In order to keep it "fair" and to ensure no one has any complaints, he also puts together different panels and bodies to oversee the projects. There's a licensing committee. There's a security council. There's a fairness board. And they all get paid.
By the time it's all figured out, 2 dollars are spent for every 1 dollar taken to keep the system running, and Mrs. Johnson has to wait around through a harsh winter while permits are drawn up and while union workers are sent specifically to her home.
There's just a huge separation between theory and practical application. Anyone can dream of a better way to do something. But that doesn't mean it works! Playing the nanny is inefficient and costly and time-consuming and ends up helping no one except those lining up to be a part of the nanny system.
Government's theorizing and central planning kills charity. It kills hard work. It kills self-reliance. The fact that people actually want government to pull in more revenue not to pay down the debt but so they don't have to stop spending is something that literally keeps me up at night.
What are they seeing that I'm missing? And should I be worried that there seem to be millions of big-government shills?
I understand wanting to follow a dream. Dream on! But when that dream is for the government to exponentially grow in size and distribute money where and how it sees fit, I think people need to find a new dream, dammit! Be your own person and stop enabling government to drive us to ruin.

This past year some friends of the family fell on hard times and needed a place to stay. My wife and I opened our house to them. Within two months they were back on their feet and living on their own. As you say neighbors look out for neighbors. If they had tried for Government help it would have been several weeks before they would have found a place to stay, other than a motel room (their son would have had to change schools as they did not have money to drive him back and forth to school). More than likely they would still be on the dole because they could not work part time until a full time job opened up.
