Do you listen to audio books? Why or why not?

I'm so busy these days that I don't get to read as much as I want to. But then I discovered audio books and found that it's nice to listen to a story being read by someone else while I am going around the house doing chores. At the moment, I have audio books in cassette tapes and CDs. But I heard that there are websites where you can download mp3s of audio books for free. I'll try those soon and save some in my iPod so I can also listen while I'm traveling to and from work. How about you? Have you also discovered the pleasure of hearing stories being told in a different format instead of reading about them? I'd love to hear your story! :)

I have a couple (and a lot of free ones on my phone) and just can't seem to get into the "book" as much as me reading it myself. I have even tried an audiobook with the hardcover book in hand and that did not work out for me too well either. I can see if one is going on a long trip or something of the sorts that would be a great idea but it is something that just has not worked for me. Zelo

That is true and in fact I listened to a chapter of an audiobook yesterday. The problem with me is that they take so long to speak the book. The book I am listening to is almost 8 hours long. Whereas if I am reading it would take me almost half that time. Doing other things while you are listening to the book is a great idea. Zelo

I guess the circumstances would have something to do with liking or not liking audio books. For me, having not much time to read these days, I find it a blessing that I still get to listen to a story while doing other things.

Yes! I love audiobooks. I can't read in the car because it makes me motion sick, so audio books for long trips is awesome. There are local library sites that let you download audio books from home with your library card. My mom also likes to listen to audio books while she's at home cleaning the house.

Same here, I get dizzy whenever I try to read anything inside a moving vehicle including text messages on my cell phone!

Now this is the first time that I have thought about audio books. Now I have been getting use to the ebooks that I have been reading but its a little different reading books on the computer. Which I don't mind but I have had to get use to that. Right now this is the first time that I have gotten a book like that. I'm more use to reading a book more than anything. I have always read books page for page and now that they have come up with a new way of reading. I guess I have to change with the time. Then I have also found out that its cheaper to ebook than to just buy the book and read it. So right now they are making a killing with the Nook and Kindle and any other eread that they have on the market right now. So I guess that the audio books are no different.

If you're adventurous enough to try out ebooks, then you should give audio books a chance too. Who knows, you might enjoy them also as I some of us here do :)

yes, yes, I love audio books. ive written here about them several times on different stories concerning them. I think it must be left over from always wanting to be read to as a child. or maybe its because like you said, sometimes you want to be entertained while doing things you have to work on. i usually listen to them when im going to sleep. sometimes though, i have to rewind or start the whole side over cause i slept through the end.

LOL, I can definitely relate to that! I also fall asleep sometimes which makes me forget in the morning what's the part I last listened to :p

Hey really now only i am hearing about it, listening audio books. I thought that it would be available only to blind people. It would be a best way to use audio books as we can hear the notes like story hearing from a friend lively. I think this should become more familiar to all, as many one can benefit from it. If you can tell the website to all here.

I very much love to read regular books. However, when I was a trucker, I got into listening to audio books. They kept me awake and involved on long trips. I still use them on car trips. In the trucker world, you can actually check one out in a Denver truck stop and return it in Kansas City! Just like a library book.

Wow, that's so cool! I'm glad you have those opportunities to listen to audio books while traveling long distances!

I love having books on my iPod! It's great to be able to "read" and have your hands free to do other things. I know it's not quite as stimulating for your brain as actual reading, but it's a great way to catch up on books and I love hearing certain authors reading their own works. I really enjoyed Stephen Fry's reading of the Harry Potter books and also his most recent auto-biography. It's a shame I no longer have a working tape player, but I'm still loathe to throw away my audio-book tapes. There's some good stuff in there!

Thanks for sharing! I hope I could also download some audio books for my ipod soon. Maybe you can check out eBay for bargain tape players so you can replay your tapes again :)

I do not listen to audio books. It needs concentration which I can never give it the full attention required. I prefer listening to songs as it is less taxing to my brain. As for stories, I would rather it be told due to the animated and visual effect.

I never really got into to the whole audio book thing. For me, I just can't follow along with it and usually end up forgetting most of it. I prefer picking up a book and reading it. I retain more and understand it better when I am able to read it. It may just be the typ e of learner that I am. I am a visual learner and not an auditory learner. If you put a book in front of me and say read this and learn, I can do it without a problem. Having some one tell me everything, and not take notes on it, I forget almost all of it. I think that audio books are good though for those who may have trouble reading or just prefer to hear a good book instead of reading it to themselves.

I had the opportunity in my high school years to listen to some audio books in an english class. It was another unique way to enjoy reading a book without havinbg to stare at the pages.

True, audio books have given us another option to learn new stories. I can even imagine how audio books could change lives for those who do not know how to read.

Never really got into the entire audio book craze to be honest for you. I just am under the impression for me that books are met to be read. In my hands, on paper, the way that I learned to read them and the way that I really intended to keep reading them. Not that I have not tried. Believe me I have tried to listen to an audio book, but it just did not work well with the way that I read books and it just seems to agitate me just a little bit. I really have no idea. Perhaps it just disrupts the flow. I enjoy more time soaking in the book and just really getting a feel for it. Something that I just cannot get when I am actually hearing the book on tape. Granted, I could pause it, but really, that would just be a bit added effort, something that I do not have to do when reading the book. Therefore, I should really stick with the more traditional method of reading books. Guess I'm stuck in that way.

Oh, I am with you when it comes to books being meant to be read. I will never turn my back on real books. In fact, one of my greatest treasures is my library of books that I've been collecting and reading for years. It's just that I'm at a time in my life where I really find it hard to find a lot of moments to sit down and read. So I found a way and am glad to discover an option that I found and which works for me :)

the last time i've listed to audio books was when i was around 6 y/o. my aunt bought me a tape (that was the latest that time, still no CDs, lol) of Cinderella and i would repeatedly listen to it until i fully memorized it. haha but as of now, i prefer reading books and ebooks than listening to audio books.

That's a nice childhood story. I'm sure your love for reading was influenced a lot by that Cinderella tape :)

Yes I have and I really find it so convenient. It's my audio Bible. :)Now, I could still have God's word even though my eyes are tired

No, I don't listen to audio books. I've tried, but I find the narrator's voice a bit jarring, especially if the narrator is a celebrity. I'd much rather listen to my own mind's 'voice' when reading.

i have done this in the past but i would much rather sit down with an actual book and read it. i get both from my local library and listening to a book just isnt the same as reading it.

I don't really listen to audio books. I much prefer just reading. I've never been interested in audio books. I never got into audio books for one reason or another. I guess it's partly due to the fact I have an easier reading books.

I once started reading/listening to an audio book and never made the same mistake again :) Books are ment to be red. listening to a book is like listening how someone is making love :)
