Do people still consider Holy Week Significant?

Australia

A sad reality beleaguering our time today is that people seem to neglect the essence of celebrating Holy Week. When Holy Week comes, people's minds go crazy about booking and reserving hotels and resorts for vacation. In other words, for them, celebrating Holy Week is tantamount to V A C A T I O N. They tend to forget the significance of this very important week as far as the history of salvation is concerned. Holy Week is supposed to be a time of reflecting and contemplating on the Paschal (Passion, Death and Resurrection) Mystery of our Lord Jesus Christ, who, through His humility, came to this earth in a form of man though in equal with God. How I just wish people would come to their senses and realise their folly.

Where I live, there are many who only think of Christ at this time and Christmas.

Hello bestboy19! :-) That is already the trend of the time. Jesus for them is for 'emergency' use only. People only pray when accidents, deaths, tragedies happen but at times of their jest and fun, Christ the Lord seems to be in oblivion. Although, this is really a very wrong notion and thinking, this can't be helped as most people are exposed to worldly things rather than on spiritual aspects of their being. Sad really, but this is true. Let us just hope and pray that someday, they will realise their folly and that they turn to God for total surrender every single minute, hour and day of their lives. God bless you and your family bestboy19!

I know . I never understood how we went from Christ to the Easter Bunny? I am not Christian so Holy week means Nothing really but Easter means all these great Passion films. I love them. This Easter TCM will be airing some of the best. But I do feel bad for those who Want this Week to be Holy for All Christians. And then us non Christians could respect it, like I do when my Muslim Friends are going through Ramadan. But many don't.

Thank you. I have my faith. I'm Jewish. But I really , truly appreciate the offer. That was so sweet of you. I sorry many called themselves Christian but do not respect Easter, The End of the Beginning! That's how I see it.

Hello Sarah! I can't believe I am actually talking to one of God's chosen people! Wow! I just can't help but appreciate the way you talk to a Catholic-Christian like me. :-) Anyway, regarding some Christians you mentioned; indeed a very sad reality that some Christians do not take Easter seriously maybe because they are too preoccupied to do things which are all focused on material assets and liabilities. However, when it comes to faith now, they are zero. Oh yes, some of them pray and attend Mass but their being a Christian ends when they step out of the church's door. :-) You know what, I like the way to perceive Easter : " The End of the Beginning" hey, you sounded more like a Christian than a Jew! :-) But seriously, I have high regards to Jews as the Christian history of salvation all came from you guys. You are the origin of all these :-) I am just curious, if you don't mind. Are there Jews nowadays, converted to Christianity? Just curious..:-) ( I do believe that the Jewish faith and the Catholics have a very good relationship and understanding.)

I appreciate your stand as a non-Christian. I like the way you say things. It is indeed with respect and for that you put yourself on a pedestal that even some "Christians" do not have - respect. Thank you for that. However, as a buddy here in myLot, I would just like to invite you to read and search for it (the truth), you might want to browse the Bible and things like that. You might even ask questions about the faith through me. I'll do my best to answer you. Again, thank you.

Yes, for these people, the Holy week is the most wonderful time of the year, since this will be their time to go into summer escapades. People of today view things in the secularist way. They forget that we only live this life once and that we should live it rightfully.

We haven't spent the Holy Week in a vacation spot or in a beach resort. During Holy Week, we make it a point to fast and do our Visita Iglesia and Stations of the Cross, the Good Friday procession and the Easter Sunday activities. Holy Week is always devoted to reflection and repentance. We can always do our swimming and vacation at beach resorts on summer. My parents would not permit us to spend vacation during Holy Week.

I commend you parents for being a good steward of God. They are guiding you on the right path always. Please extend my warmest regards and congratulations to them. I totally agree with your folks. Even if Holy Week is still part of summer, there are other days wherein you can do your swimming, beach hopping, party by the beach, etc. some other time and not during Holy Week. The problem with some people is that, they are missing the point of having a Holy week. The reason why its called "HOLY" its because it is allotted for reflection and meditation; not for party and vacation...

As you said, people dont consider it the way they used to observe the holy week. In my religion, we dont observe the holy week cause we believe in the living God, we believe that God is living now. Anyway, people are excited every holy week cause they go on vacations.

It is easter a time of new growth. Our ancestors relied on growing plants to feed themselves and their animals so new growth was a sign that they were going to survive for another years. So they celebrated. Now to ensure that there would be new growth they would sacrifice to their gods and this often involved human sacrifice. All this was long before christanity was ever thought about but the crucifixion at easter is not a coincidence. It is once again a human sacrifice carried out at the traditional time to their god. It is not a mystery it is or was normal human activity

I have to agree. Even I am guilty of this. Most of the times, I only fast during Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Black Saturday. I've tried to avoid meat but I really can't take it. Sometimes though I eat fish. I'm not really sure if that tradition is still going on, but I am trying to follow it. I really hope I could wake up to the reality.

Yes, it's sad that people are starting to neglect the essence of commemorating Holy week and instead associate it with Summer getaway. The reason given is that they have been working hard or studying hard for the entire year and this is the only time to really relax with the family. But reflecting during the Holy week and giving attention to spiritual matters during this week with the family will actually turn out to be more beneficial, for man is not only made of body but is also a spiritual being. And also we should realize that it was God who created all of the beaches and the tourist spots and it would be selfish for us to think only of ourselves and not devote time to God after all that He has given us.

Agree! People are looking forward to holy week not because they would give homage or do church visits. Theyre looking forward to long weekend holiday, the perfect spot to spend their leisure and to pamper themselves away from the stress of their job. Yearly i noticed that less people pay respect to this holiday. Some people still actually work because of they will be paid in double.
