mas mabuti na ang manakawan kesa sa masunugan loosely translated as: it's better to be robbed than to lose your property to fire it's a popular saying here in the philippines but i'd rather not have any of these mishaps happening to me my girlfriend's house got robbed 3 days after our house burned they lost cash, jewelry, clothes and other stuff to this woman http://www.picable.com/People/Fashion/Accessories/Beware-of-Thieving-Maids.2333443 would you ever trust your maid again? would you ever get one again? how can you be sure you won't get robbed again?

That is so sad...As for having maids, it is better to have someone who is referred by a trusted friend.

Whoa...it is really hard to trust strangers these days. i hope she gets her karma... We are planning to have a helper too but we are considering people in our barrio whom we know.

That particular saying was discussed extensively in my household when we came out from Ondoy. The house was divided on the issue, while I was ambivalent. Like you, I would rather not experience either, but if I had to, I'd rather choose losing my valuables to the fire. Being robbed is a violation of your sense of security - that is to say, that if you cannot be safe inside your house, where would you go? Plus, the feeling does not go away. Fire on the hand, will give me a chance to rebuild my life.

My family was also hit by Ondoy. Really hard. and the fire that consumed our house, made us really sad. seeing your house burn is not a pleasant experience. but hope remains and we are slowly rebuilding ourselves. let's see what 2011 has for my family.

Hi Dear Chipesterkhan! I am really very sorry to know about the two incidences! I really don't have any idea how the fire engulfed your house, possibly it could have been an accident! It is really very disheartening to know about it! Do you have insurance against the property? Do you get any financial help under such circumstances from any agencies like NGOs or Government Organizations? Regarding the robbery that has taken place at your girl friend by he maid servant, all I can say is these types of crimes have become very common in India also. Here in India unfortunately many a times the house hold members are killed and the property is robbed. the old people and the children are most vulnerable for such incidences! Luckily your girl friend is having all the details and photograph of this maid which can help the local police to trace out the criminals. In India in spite of repeated warnings given by the police to the Citizens still people are not taking interest in keeping the photograph and the required details with them. In fact we are suppose to submit the data about the would be servant to the local police station to verify about his/her criminal record if there is any. But this part is normally ignored by the people and they suffer the repercussions! I sincerely pray the God to bless your and your girl friends family with required courage to face this time of crisis bravely! All the best! Thanks !

hi chipesterkhan I can imagine if I had a maid and she stole from me I sure wou ld not be trusting another maid at all. here in this tiresome retirement center I keep my purse on my person when I leave our room as I left it here and a twenty dollar bill just went byebye.I could have reported it to the front deask but they wou ld just say are you sure you had a twenty dollar bill? seems if you are over seventy they feel you do not know what the hell you are talking about. So I have b ecome proactive about money and my health both. but yes fire is a lot more awful as it destroys all ones home and belongings too.Thievery is to me the most cowardly of crimes and always makes me so angry if that ghief had used his cunning to earn money instead of stealing he might become] a well to do person.

I think i'd be a nervous wreck if I had to go through all that! I wouldn't trust people for a while after being robbed. I have had it happen to me before so I know how bad it hurts, but to have your house burn down too? That is just sad.

Wow!! Neither one of these would I want happen, but material things like Jewelry and money are definately easier to replace than a home depending on the type of Insurance once has as well. The woman who chose to rob your girlfriend who was also her maid is not a Good thing to have happen for sure. I hope she gets punished for her crime, and never is allowed as a maid anywhere again.

I think so, but I prefer both to not happen to me/us. sometimes robbers take the lives of the owners which is not good. about the maids, better to get one from your province or a friend of friend. that's what we did, hehehe.. just don't be to much comfy with the maid. ^_^

Well i wouldn't want either of them to happen to my house or anyone's house for that matter. But maybe i would prefer robbing than burning . Many people would agree with this i guess. Better lose something than everything at all. Moreover when robbing our assets just go to someone else but while burning down they are lost forever so i guess one could look at this as a positive thing but we would be like mad about this. Well here maids are very nice and decent. They work honestly but you can't say anything these days now. I had better be on my guard also now! I am so sorry about your house. Cheers!

I agree with the phrase, better to be robbed rather than burned the house. Because when they robbed your house just the important things will be taken unlike when burning, it is a worst part everything turned to ashes. That's why I don't like to hire a maid whom I don't know her whereabout, I'd rather get from my distant relatives or a recommended by my relatives or friends than hiring one from agency.

well, i think both incidences should be avoided. we should not think of which incidence would cause a greater damage, rather, we should think of how to stop such incidences from occurring. :) but in my on point of view, it's better to be robbed, seeing your house burning would be very depressing, nothing will remain. however, a burning house could be prevented if safety precautions are observed. :) everybody should be alert at all times to prevent such incidences from happening.

Same thing goes for me. I'd rather not be robbed and I'd rather not have my house burnt. However, if I really had to choose, of course I'll choose the former for obvious reasons. Thanks for sharing the link of the picture of the maid by the way. That way, other people won't have to make the same mistakes. If it happened to me, I'll still probably have maids but I'd be more cautious in choosing one.

just like you, i'd rather not choose any of those mishaps.. :) trusting other people is really hard nowadays.. it seems like you can't really trust anybody now.. we are having a housemaid now but we are still careful and doing precautions.. also, we know the family of our housemaid that is why i recommend that if you have your maid it is still better of you personally know your housemaid and their background.. but still, we should be cautious like locking your room if you will be going out and locking your personal stuffs in your cabinet.. however, eventhough how careful we are, there is always that possibility of being robbed, etc.. :)

Yeah I've heard of that saying before...maybe because if you get robbed, not everything is taken from us. Unlike when its a fire, you can loose your entire house to it.

Well, I haven't had either of those things happen to me thankfully but I can imagine it would be pretty devastating to suffer from either scenario! I guess there's always going to be sentimental value attached to material things and it's probably going to be the worst day of your life when either of these two scenarios takes place. That's quite a horrendus story though in relation to the maid! I guess it just goes to show that it's very difficult to trust anyone these days. I certainly don't put a lot of trust in people until I have known them for a number of years, better to be safe than sorry I guess but even then it's difficult to tell whether someone you've know for a long time is going to cross you or not. Yes, but it is definitely so much worse if you got your house is on fire and you're being robbed at the same time..or vice versa. Which is what happens to most people here..while their house is on fire they're also getting robbed. Since it is the perfect time to rob someone when they're frantic about saving their house. But yes, it would be great if none of that happened anymore.. That's why we don't have maids, or at least we nly hire someone who's our relative...you can never just trust anyone these days.

Thats why we need to be careful who we will allow to enter our household. Nowadays its hard to put trust to somebody even if that person is nice or working for us. We need to be vigilant. But then i agree i dont also want those mishaps to happen in my household. Ill just prevent it to happen as much as possible.
