Would you like a Muffin or a Cupcake?

Is there a difference between a cupcake and a muffin? I thought that they were the same until I sneak into my sister's room that I accidentally saw her recipe notebook (she's taking pastry lessons). In one of her notes it has a headline which reads: "MUFFIN or CUPCAKE" - I laughed. When she got home I can't contain myself, I laugh at her face and said: "why can't you differentiate a muffin from a cupcake they are just the same!". She looked at me and said "you are ignorant, of course they are not the same" then she explained: "Muffins do not have any frosting or the icing that you see on top but cupcakes do and that basically is the difference you could see automatically." And I conclude that Muffins and cupcakes are not the same. Do you have a similar know-it-all experience?
