If you use it intelligently, then it can be very helpful, but people who are completely obsessed with it are really strange to me. The kind of people I'm talking about are the ones who will put up stacks of private pictures, write streams of text message-influenced drivel and have 5000 "friends", 4,998 of whom they've never actually met.

I agree. I think that facebook has distorted the meaning of the word "friend". I wonder if it is preventing a generation of young people from understanding what friendship really means. It also does blur the lines of who it is appropriate to share personal information and pictures with.

Of the sites you listed, I only use facebook. I find it helpful because I can keep up with friends and family. We can share photos and information without have to send email, call, or snail mail. I would feel very isolated without it at this point. On the negative side, I spend too much time on facebook. I think in a way it may keep me detached from "real life". But, I know I will keep using it because it's a big part of my life.
