...seen through Sir Bobby Charlton's eyes. He was one of the survivors, of course. It was on BBC Two last night for an hour and a half. Did anyone see it? Awesome wasn't it? However, Sandy Busby, Matt Busby's son, isn't happy about the portrayal of his Dad in the film. He said he looked like a gangster and was "blamed" in the film, for the disaster. This I dispute as - if you read about the Munich Air Disaster itself, it was the pilot's decision to fly the plane in poor conditions, not Matt Busby's. Apparently, the pilot didn't want an overnight stay in Munich so that was the reason there were 2 failed attempts, then they all got off but went back on it again after only 15 minutes. In that time the weather deteriorated further and I believe the slush on the runway hampered the plane's progress. Yes, Matt Busby wanted to fly the team to a match in Europe rather than take the ferry but that was to save time, as they had to get back within 24 hours to play their fixture against Wolverhampton Wanderers. Something does perturb me though. One image had a lasting impression on me and it showed Bobby Charlton (still strapped in his seat) in the snow with a chap next to him who had died. Those were the only two seats away from the plane. After doing some research on this, it turns out that he was one of the people the heroic Goalie (Harry Gregg) rescued from the plane itself..he wasn't isolated at all. I did think at the time, "why did Bobby survive and the passenger next to him die?" but now I know! It didn't happen that way. The makers of the film obviously decided to make it more dramatic by isolating a couple of the seats. It was good that they featured our old seats at Brunton Park in a bigger, computer-generated image, resembling Man Utd's old ground. We knew this before watching it. The training session was filmed on a field linking Rickerby Park, also in Carlisle. Not so sure about the changing rooms! Ours aren't that old! On the whole it was an amazing bit of television and I cried all the way through. I now know why Bobby Charlton has sadness in his eyes. He feels guilty about surviving when most of the Busby Babes perished.
