Have you experience seeing a person that attempts to commit suicide? What is the first thing did you do? Seeing with your own eyes, standing in front of you and ready to commit suicide. If you are just going to leave that person and call for help, it would be too late. If you come back, that person is already dead.

Give the person every chance to unburden his troubles and ventilate his feelings. You don't need to say much and there are no magical words. If you are concerned, your voice and manner will show it. Give him support from being alone with his pain; let him know you are glad he turned to you.

I never had such experience. Seeing a person in attempt of killing himself is devastating. If ever I will encounter such situation I don't really know what to say. Maybe if I don't know the person personally then I would just rouse the attention of people around to help him. If I know him/her personally then the best thing I could do is to keep company and talk to that person on the cause of such attempt.
