No offense but I really believe that if you are venturing into a business you should use a professional tool to help you.
I would like to suggest Adobe Photoshop as the software to be used mainly because it has a lot of powerful tools. Although its expensive, you will be able to get your money's worth in the long run.

I think Photoshop is a very professional software for photo editing. And it is also a complicated software in my opinion. If you can master it well, you will be able to do many great effects with it. There is also another easy Chinese software called Neoimaging. It is very simple to make nice effects with this software and especially this software is free to download.
I love China

The Gimp is probably the best free photo-editing software. It is said to have 95% of the functionality of Photoshop (and the other 5% consists of functions which are rarely used). It is an open-source software and is well supported by many people.
The interface is somewhat different from Photoshop but if you are learning the software from scratch, that should not be a disadvantage. There are plenty of tutorials available for free, too.
You can read about it and download it here: http://www.gimp.org/
For the more simple, run-of-the mill photo editing, I use Paint.net. This was originally written as a student project for something to replace MS Paint (the free program that comes with Windows). I developed into something far more powerful, though. Again, it is open source and therefore free. Although it is not as powerful as Gimp, it is very useful and easy to use for most of the everyday tasks that you will want to do. I find that I use it about 80% of the time and may often do something in Gimp, save it and do other things in Paint.net. You can read about and download Paint.net here: http://www.getpaint.net/
Finally, I ought to mention a different kind of package. Inkscape is a vector editing program. Vector graphics have the advantage that they can be enlarged to whatever size you want without that blockiness (pixellation) which you get when you try to enlarge a small bitmap image (for example, .jpg, .bmp, .png and so on). Bitmap graphics can't be easily turned into vector graphics but Inkscape has a plugin which can trace a bitmap image and convert it into shapes of different colours. The result can be something like posterizing an image. It is also useful for creating certain text effects and other graphics shapes which can be resized without losing definition.
You can find out more about Inkscape here: http://inkscape.org/
These three tools should do everything that you need.
