Don't kids get a lot of holidays from school these days?

I am babysitting tomorrow (she's 9!). Another bank holiday weekend in the UK so more time off for the children. Tomorrow the schools are closed because of some wedding or another? This month it has been 2 holiday weekends, easter week and an inservice day. Now i have to try to hope for good weather so i can plan a day out to the beach or something in the garden. How many holidays do your kids get? who looks after them when they are off? who wishes they had trained as a teacher for all those paid holidays? lol!

My mother used to shudder at the thought of her kids getting holidays. Being an open house all the children from the neighbourhood would gather at ours and the din that we were able to create would suffice to wake Kumbhakarna (Kumbhakarna a character in the Ramayana used to remain awake for six months and sleep for next six months!)We used to keep the chores that we were supposed to do pending and that was enough for Mom to get into tantrums!

Hi. ajk111. I take care of my kids while they are out for the holidays. My husband does too if he is not working that day of if he is out. I feel that kids get so many days out of school too much. Right now, as it gets closer to the school getting out for the summer vacation, the students are not getting out too much. They are in school more, the school is trying to allow them to make up for the days that they have missed due to inclement weather. When they get out for the holidays, then the next thing that I know, they are out for In service Day. They also get out early on certain Wednesdays too. It is something else in the middle of the year, but as soon as school is out the kids are in school much longer then.

yes i agree. plus the older kids are studying for important exams coming up soon. i also found that strange how 15-16 yr old kids had to go through the torture of studying for their most important exams when the weather is always at it's best! lol!

absolutely 3honor, another was the age thing!!! i always advocated to change the exam age to 21!! most folk i went to school with when studying for exams were... 1..put off by the short lived good weather 2..at the precarious age of 16/17 were discovering the joys of underage drinking 3..being infatuated by boyfriends/girlfriends. leave the exams till they are 21 and all that is out of their system! lol!

I hear you with the many days off too many if you ask me and since you are asking. My boyfriends little one is in England and although we get her twice a year here in the US we get rushed at times because she has to return to school. Funny how we call weekly and do not get responded to and then the answer is that they were away on holiday. We often wonder why so many days off. Here in the US there is a curriculum that all public and parochial schools equally have where as they have pretty much the same time off in all public schools and or the same days off for the parochial schools. When mine were little I had to always be one step ahead of the school schedule to make sure I made arrangements, because I could not take time off if I had not prepped in advance. I don't envy the teachers, poor teachers they need time away from the kiddos. As for you and your daughter stay away from the competition, do not want you to be hurt again. lol

yes, it's the amount of forward planning you need to do with arranging time of work. i don't know how single parents cope! And you are right, i suspect that teaching may be more stressful than we think lol! i know play badmington with kneepads, shinpads and a jockstrap, you can never be too careful!lol!

You know what the worst one is! university! there is a saying between my friends working hard 24 hours a day 7 days a week 2 weeks in the year. I started second year of my HONOURS BACHELORS DEGREE not bsc... but even more strenuous with my ACCA (which normally takes people years after university to complete!)combined so that's 2 degrees in one skipping out the basics in October 20th may is my last exam! in-between we have had 2 months of holidays! can you imagine that. and we are supposed to be the future of the financial world. I don't see that happening with the lack of discipline!
