Hotels can cancel your reservation with out giving you a reason

Several years ago I attended a convention in California and had made reservations three months in advance. When I got there I was given a key and went to the room and found that someone else was in the room. The desk clerk told me that the manager sometimes will reassign a room and not tell the front desk. The desk clerk was able to find me another room (a better one - higher up and ocean view instead of a courtyard view) at no extra charge.
In one of my travel newsletters I receive was this article which was a suprise to me that Hotels and Motels can cancel your reservation and they owe you nothing and you have very little recourse.

These stories do show that if you are persistent you may succeed in getting a room. If such a thing happened to you I would suggest that you contact the main office of the Hotel Chain. In today's Internet would you do have many places to write reviews and mention your experience. Many reputable business will go to great lengths to avoid negative reviews. I have nicely explained the problem to different Hotels and restaurants and often it has been corrected by complementing me or by a forgiveness of all or part of the bill.
It is important to try the polite way first and act as if it was an honest mistake. The old saying you get more with honey than vinegar.

You booked the hotel room 3 months in advance so it must have been a shock to see someone else in your room. Well done for staying calm and polite in that situation. It got you the ocean view and better room. I imagine that each hotel doesn't want negative reviews. Yes, the Internet could show phone numbers to try.
I was hoping to stay at a motel I saw adverised in my travel guide book in Victoria, Vancouver Island. When I arrived there I was shocked to see it had closed down and was shut up. It had looked like reasonably priced accommodation close to the center in a quiet location. I walked round five other reasonably priced places explaining that I wished to have a double or twin room. I had a travel cot for my daughter.
In the end I got a guest house manager that didn't have space to phone round likely places. He found an inn that had a triple room. He phoned for a taxi and off I took my kids to there. It was a bus ride into the center every day but it was an ideal place to stay. It even had Internet access.
