What causes to keep a copy of a book for your personal library.

I think that about eighty percent or so of the books that I read, I end up giving away or putting in a garage sale or donate to the library, or whatever. Then there comes a book that is so good, I think that I might want to reread that again down the road. It might not be any time soon but there is a chance and I want to keep a copy on hand. It has to be something special, something that I can't wait to turn the page and see what happens next. Something that I could read it ten times and it would never get boring. That's what causes me to keep a book for my personal library.

Well my standards for keeping a book isn't nearly as strict as yours. If I really really like a book then I'll keep it. It doesn't really have to be one that I adored and I couldn't put down. If I got a book from the library or a friend and I enjoyed it then I'll probably get my own copy sometime. I like buying books new because I'm a fan of supporting my favorite authors, but recently I've done a lot more library runs and used book store runs just cause I don't have any money. I still keep a list of the books that I really enjoy and want a copy of.

If I don't have any money then I'll usually choose going to the library over going to a used bookstore because I prefer to buy books new. (Many reasons. They're shinier, less broken-down, and I'm actually supporting the author/publishers when I pay for it instead of just the bookstore owners. I like supporting the book industry and starving writers.) I don't really care much about room in my house. I can always get a new bookshelf or a bigger house. Sometimes I'd rather get a bigger library than give away books.

Not having enough money to buy new books for pleasure, I know that feeling. There are times where the funds are a little short, so I have to go with books that are a bit more ragged, used, not knowing where they have been. Of course, when you add in the room. While a lot of stuff got cleared out a while back, there are times where I got to be creative. Thanks for responding. Its appreciated. Have a nice day.

Interesting discussion, I have an attachment to some of the books I read but I end up selling them or giving them away as well. They become a burden when I have to move and pay transportation costs for their weight on the plane or to ship them to a new location. Also, when I am low on money I find them a good way to make a little extra, although it's sad to see them go. I never really read the books I keep anyway.

Yeah, I can see how that would be a problem. Not a problem that I could really have to deal with all that often, but it is something that I can see being a problem. I really never have had to deal with moving books all too much but it does seem to be costly if you have a much larger library. Thanks for responding. Its appreciated. Have a nice day.

I keep books that are specifically to my childcare business. Ones that are helpfull in raising my children or would help in the ages of the children that I care for. Art books for sure. Then I have a few very old books that I really like the antique look to them. And then books that are very very good that made an impression on me while I was reading them. But for the most part I give them away.

I can see how childrens books would be something that could be kept. If they are rather useful for one child, then they are going to be rather useful for other children. So the use can continue again and again, for as long as you want. So that is a really good reason of why a person should hold onto certain books. Thanks for responding. Its appreciated. Have a nice day.

Usually I will ask myself if I have a need to keep it. If so, I will buy it and keep a copy. I love reading, especially computer books involving graphics or programming. Such books takes time to digest, and while I could borrow them from the library, it would be troublesome to keep renewing, and there is a limit to the number of renewals. I know it can end up an expensive hobby, but at least I don't buy many other things...I hope.

Yeah obviously getting a copy of every single thing, that might be slightly problematic. You need to really pick and choose your spots, getting the books and really reading the one's that are going to be among the most vital. It can be tricky at times, but you need to be rather selective and decide what is most important. Thanks for responding. Its appreciated. Have a nice day.

Good books are hard to let go, whether for entertainment, educational, or inspirational. There is always that book you don't feel like parting ways with it, keep it. It be referal to some apeaaling fact in your life or ideas of interest. One way or or another, you keep it, you enjoy it at your leisure. You give it away, you are going to miss it one day.

I think that's a lesson that many of us have learned the hard way. We think that we might not want a book right now. However, who is to say that we don't want that book a couple of years or months and months down the line. It is just some interesting food for thought. The books we might not want today, we really don't know how useful they will be later down the road. So if we have a feeling, then its a good idea to hang onto them for a little while longer or whatever. Thanks for responding. Its appreciated. Have a nice day.

I usually keep most of my books since a lot of the people I normally give hand-me-downs to don't appreciate reading as much as I do, so my personal library is a mess of multiple genres. The books I would never think of giving away would probably be those I have emotional attachments to (i.e. someone special game them to me), those I cried over because they were that good and those that absolutely caught my imagination.

Yeah, I don't know that many people who appreciate reading, at least to the extent I do. Of course, there are a few people who I can nudge here and there and a couple of people who are close. I tend to try and make a bit of a profit if I can't get rid of those books, by selling them, especially during Garage sale season around here. Just got to free up the space, but got to figure out which one's I need to keep. Thanks for responding. Its appreciated. Have a nice day.

Every so often there is a book that grabs me and I will read it over and over finding new things each time. Some books I feel will be a a classic and be enjoyable for others too.

A book that grabs our attention, it is really a sight to behold. It does really depend a lot of the time how often that happens with me. There are many times where there are many good books that I pick. The selection is good and I really have to separate the good from the really good. Then there are times where they run cold. Still the best of the best is what I keep. Thanks for responding. Its appreciated. Have a nice day.

I throw away a lot of the books I read; either that or I'll keep bits of them I like and throw the rest away. As I'm a Christian, I'll tend to throw away books containing a lot of "dark" material. As to the books i keep, they are usually relatively free of this material. I'm a curious person and I like to read all sorts of things; but I don't keep everything. I have quite a large library though, of select books.

I think we all have different tastes. Still there are many interesting books out there. Of course, there are not going to be something that is going to be within our personal tastes. One person's epic, is another person's disliked book. Such is life and that is the way the world goes. Still its good to have a sizeable library of books, to pass the time. Thanks for responding. Its appreciated. Have a nice day.

i do noy buy new books ever. if i get a book, my first stop is the library and my second is the used book store. the only reason i would buy a abook is that it was a decorating or craft book that i could reuse over and over again.

Fair enough. I tend to be the sentimental type a lot of the time. Therefore, I am going to keep a lot of the books that I read. Then again, when the closest library got shut down and the other one reduced their hours really open, it really just made it a bit less convenient to take a trip there anymore. Still I can see people not keeping books. Thanks for responding. Its appreciated. Have a nice day.

I'm somewhat like you, as I do keep books that I have really enjoyed and such. At the same time though, it can still be difficult for me to sell or give away books, because I really do enjoy reading books. I do still try to sell or give away books that I haven't read at all or anything like that. I just feel so comfortable when I reading a book, or looking for a new book to read.

Yeah it can be a tricky decision to make. If I give that book away, who's to say I might want to take a second look at it, six months or a year down the line. For instance, if I hear a sequel is coming out, I might want to re read the first book, but if its not there, then that would be bad times. Still really do like books, enjoy them one hundred percent. Thanks for responding. Its appreciated. Have a nice day.

When i really enjoy reading a book is when i want my own copy to keep at home. Being able to read it whenever i want to is inspiring to my world of reading and is something that will make me happy.

Reading is certain an inspiration to the world. It allows us to open our mind to new possible worlds. That is really what life is all about in many ways. Just sit down and get a book and really just enjoy what life brings us. It is potentially amazing what life does in fact bring us through the art of reading. Of course, it does take a great book to keep it in my library. Thanks for responding. Its appreciated. Have a nice day.

I like to keep books. There are some books I have only read once or twice, and some that I will never rid my collection of because they are dear to me. I have some first editions, and I have some books that are so old, they were in the 1800's. However, last month we moved. I lost a lot of storage, as well as my book shelves (they were actually closet shelves built into my walls in my apartment), so now I'm faced with several boxes of books with nowhere to put them. Therefore, I am considering selling (or donating those I don't manage to sell), to alleviate my life of some clutter. It won't stop my enthusiasm for reading, but I admittedly haven't bought a book in quite some time, as I have a book exchange going on with a couple of co-workers and we read them and trade off, and that works pretty well.

Yeah there were times where I think that I have had like a couple boxes full of books, but right now, I don't know where to put them. Just to got to rearrange stuff, trying to put them in the right place. Look at what I have, make a list, think about what I have. There are a lot of times where space limitations can make it very tricky and we have to give up our favorite books. Still it looks like you have a good method down cold. Thanks for responding. Its appreciated. Have a nice day.
