Who should open in South Africa for Pakistan?

November 19, 2006 1:25pm CST
Pakistan have been going in with Mohammad Hafeez and Imran Farhat at the top of the order with moderate success so far. The thing is people are getting carried away. Hafeez is in there because he can bowl. Farhat is very flashy and vulnerable to being caught behind the wicket. I am sure these guys are very fine players in Pakistani conditions but that will only get Pakistan so far. If Pakistan ever want to be a top side, they need to pick players who will perform away from Asia as well. The only two current openers who have a test 100 abroad are Taufeeq (RSA) and Salman (Aus). They do not gift their wickets like Farhat and Hameed and they complement each other well. I hope Bari sees sense and recalls them before it is too late.

I am sure the selectors have a tough time in getting the write players in at the right time. Both players mentioned are very good cricketers. Farhat is vulnerable in getting caught behind the wicket because he plays a lot more aggressive cricket. Possibly an option for the selectors is to alternate between the 2 batsman in 1 day and in test cricket. Who's going to win the world cup?

Hafeez just scored a hundred. With the kind ofform Mo. Yu is in, it really does not matter who opens actually. Even if Umar Gul opened Pakistan would still post a decent total. :)

It would appear that Hafeez/Farhat are doing better because they have been persisted with, however abroad is the real test!

Well I don't see why Shoib Malik can't open.

I think Kaman Akmal is a very good option. Pakistn can then afford to play one more bowler. Nice post. Thanks again.

kamran is a ODI batsman not test player so he is good at no 6 or 7 place but I think pakistani should have to give the chance to salman butt

well imran farhat is really waste of time he should be removed immediately bcoz his ability with bat is doubtful moreover he cant build innings its either a block or flash so farhat should be out well give some more chance to hafeez. for SA TOUR taufeeq & salman buttt should be preferred both have high test averages butt even having centurry against aussies in their country

I think selectors have to select salman butt he is a good opener and he is better then hafeez in batting although hafeez is good in feilding and bowling but salman is better as well as opening player is consern

You touch on what to me anyway is a crucial point. I always believe you pick tbe batsmen for batting, the bowlers for bowling and the keepers for keeping!

I realise that but the reason for the question is the marked difference in conditions between Asia and South Africa, which is the greatest obstacle to Pak and India winning, not cricketing ability.

It should be Salman Butt and Kamran Akmal I think...cuz Farhat, as you said, was flashy and likes to pull a lot...In bouncy South Africa, if he's unable to control himself, he'll keep getting himself caught on pulls and hooks, but he's not performing bad right now...zo, it'll be hard to decide

I think It should be Farhat and Hafeez. Hameed has had his chances. The way Yousef is playing, it does seem that any opner will do. Even you Gary :) Nice post again. you got a +
