Do smart phones make you smart?

Smart phones, android apps, branded clothes, shoes, luxury saloon cars - just a few things that make you smart. But does it really take this much? Won't you call me smart with my basic phone that I carry or the normal clothes that I wear? I was wondering about my minimal living as opposed to people around who smell of brands. So, what makes you smart?

Hello mimpi. There are some maniacs out there, but it is actually less then wise to go and buy the latest of gadgets. Lets take computers for example. A computer that is let's say 2.000 us dollars today, will be half that price in a matter of months as the technology improves quickly, and it is not very different than one that is about 1.200 US dollars in the sense that games out there today don't ask for so much resources to start with. Such a case applies to phones, in the matter of prices drop as well as with most cars. Being smart has nothing to do with clothes or appliances that you use, except if you buy big energy consumer appliances, in that case you know you made the wrong choice.

You are right Alex. Smartness comes more from within than without and the day we realize this we become smarter.

I think that sometimes less is smarter. I don't have the things that some of the people I am around or work with has, but I am not struggling with the same bills they have either. I don't think it's a bad thing to indulge ones self, but I know what my limits are. If I can't afford it..I know it's not time for me to have it.

That makes two of us Jen. I think, I am what I do and what I carry. My belonging doesn't make me smarter. Smartness comes from within.

Spectacles make you smart in the eyes of people, to a certain extent; I thought half the popularity Ambedkar commanded was thanks to his smooth, erudite, bespectacled appearance. Just kidding of course, no offence to his radiant mind. I am quite like you in this respect, and find it vain to pour money on assiduously chosen brands and assortments. Simply because you don't spend your energies thinking all the time what you have been wearing and how it might stir the people around. Nor do others. You may think about it for seconds, but eventually you'll be unmindful of it most of the time, in most places. So, unless it is someone I really want to strike an impression upon, I will be fine with anything that lets me be myself, others themselves, and go about my duties. It beats me why things should be different with others.

That's pretty much my opinion as well. In my endeavor to live minimal , I am trying to cut down on the excesses. Still a lot to be done though. In the process, I found out that smartness is what we do and not the physical accessories that belong to us. And no one should belittle that. BTW, some do feel that spectacles make you look smart, and I do not have any problem with that.

It's not what you have but what you do with what you have that makes you smart. That's the short version of it anyway.^_^ If a person has a lot of branded stuff that he/she doesnt really need then its just a waste of space and money. That's really not being smart. Now, if a person has only one gadget or item but uses it to its fullest and it serves it's purpose, then he/she is quite smart. Plus, he/she also has the extra funds to buy necessities. That's just what I think anyways.^_^

Hi cutie pie, that's so true. I Too believe, what we do makes us smart and what we wear. And people looking down upon the minimalists are not just done.

smart phone can make you seem smart, but make you seem stylish and fashion update. It can make you seem smart if you show to people you that you can use it like all function that ponsel offer, but still depends on how you show it. I think a notebook will make people seem smart. Imagine... sit down on park, wear glass, orange juice and steak on table, and you look so serious with your notebook. Hmmm... it seem more smart & cool :-)

I get your point there. Yes people do look smart with smart gadgets. But what do you think about people who don't. Can they be smart?

There's no comparison really .. iT's smart for the phone not for the human lol and dealing with it doesn't make me smart in anything .. i think what make me smart not what am wearing but how much knowledge i have and the ability of dicsussing issues with people ..that make me smart :D

Over use of technology certainly does not make us smarter and neither does the use of sophisticated and luxury brands. Let me give you and example of comparison in terms of intelligence comparison. Using a calculator to do a simple calculation versus an Abacus. Now imagine the calculator is voice modulated. Sure the technology makes thingseasier, maybe intriguing, but don't you think it reduces our smartness and intelligence use? In my view I think people are getting too hooked to the virtual world and too dependant on technology. I'd stick with simple basic things be it a mobile phone or even a car. I've learnt that the smart thing to do is not be extravagant and get carried away. Stick to the necessecites, a little comfort is not bad.

I am trying to make my life easier, minimal. I would not buy something that would make it difficult. I have been streamlining my living extravagance and no way like to go with the trend. Having said this, I would definitely consider buying something that would make me work and live better. I believe in steadiness and not speed.

Hi mimpi! Very Good Post! Now a days rich people prefer to have Smart Phones, branded hand begs and branded clothes/shoes and high end cars. They carry these things as a status symbol. The other day, my neighbor’s son (who is employed) was carrying a Black Berry smart phone. When I questioned him about utility of Black Berry handset, he could not give a convincing answer except that he carries Black Berry as a status symbol. I think those who have plenty of money (read black money) and those who do not know how to spend the excess money; they indulge in all kind of luxuries and feel (a false sense of) pride. They like to interact with those who are like them and they love to flaunt their branded outfits and accessories. For people like me and you we feel satisfied in whatever we have or we have been able to acquire. We are honest and fair, therefore, we are not pretentious like them and are better than those people, and this is what I believe.

Well, the phone is smart, that is not a comment about the owner. I don't carry my smart phone as a fashion statement, but rather as a tool for living. So maybe it is more like WORK! I don't much care for luxury cars, but gotta have the internet on my phone. Gotta have GPS, too.

No, I don't think that buying the latest and best really does make people smart. In fact...well if they have the money to blow, its their business. However, if I had something that already works, then I am going to milk it for all its worth. Not to mention, a lot of the smart phones and whatever out there, I can only see myself using it very infrequently at very best. Then again, there are a lot of things in this world, that I do not get. Still there are many people who are driven by the hottest and latest products on the market. Despite the fact that they do in fact have something rather good and perhaps they really are not going to use it all that often. Or it is not vital that they use it, to the point where they shoehorn the use in. The thing about the latest brands is what's in today, is not going to be in a week from now or even an hour from now. It is enough to make your head spin when you think about it.

Thanks megamatt. I think, I pretty much pine the same. I have no problems with others using the latest gadgets (some really make good use of them and for some they are essential). I also do not have any problem with the people who blow money on things they would hardly use. My point is, it's wrong when some people think that people who are not fashionable are not smart. Smartness is beyond the brands and gadgets and materials.

What makes a person smart is themselves. No things can replace a persons Knowledge. Materials are just thing that can easily be taken away. What matters most is that we do have a brain that will help us for our future.

So true. It's what you do makes you smart and not what you wear or carry. Those may create a first impression but that's it.
