My husband gave me a call in the afternoon last wednesday asking me to come home immediately as he had reached home. I was a little suspicious and anxious as well. I came home to see him in a harried state with two of his collegues who explained to me that he had complained of chest pain and they had taken him to the hospital nearby and then drove him back home. There started my week with tests and doctor appointments and we had gone to a cardiologist expecting the worst. But fortunately, his heart is in good condition. It was something else which was the problem. His blood sugar was so high as was his cholesterol. We hardly suspected this! Now he is under medication to reduce his blood sugar levels and cholesterol as well. He is feeling very drowsy all the time and is feeling tired and weak. How do people with diabetes cope. Even though my mom and his mom have diabetes, we did not pay much attention to what they were eating and stuff. But now since he has it now, I am looking up in the net as to what to eat and what not to eat, what to do and how should the lifestyle be etc. Any help and suggestions from mylotters will be welcome. And I apologise to all of you whose sites I have not been clicking for the past few days. Those days have been very hectic with tests in the morning which go on till afternoon and then waiting to get the results and then waiting to see the doctor for his opinion which resulted in him writing some more tests to be taken the next morning and so on. Another appointment on friday. And hopefully, his blood sugar should have gone down by then.

Oh dear ! How worrying! Your husband is less than 40 isn't it? And he has diabetes and cholestrol? anyhow, now that he is under observation and diagnosis do not worry. WHta is the reading for his PP sugar and fasting sugar? And how much is this cholestrol? WHat is the reading for HDL AND LDL? Diabetic people should manage their sugar levels with proper food and exercise. THe doctor would give you a list of 'do's and dont's. Let him avoid bananas, mangoes, grapes and all sweets and sugar. Dry fruits , too much of carbohydrates must not be had. FOod must be had at regular intervals ;he must not starve for too long and then eat extra food. Daily walk for minimum 25 minutes [brisk walk] is recommended. But, some people never cooperate .Nothing can be done in that case.Let him have food rich in fibre content , plenty of leafy vegetables and salads. If he has diabetic pills to reduce sugar , let him have his food immediately within a few minutes or else he would faint. Probably he is taking pills and is not having proper food and that is why he is drowsy. Ensure he eats soon after he has his diabetic pill[have they suggested diabetic medicine before or after food]

one amla per day is very good to keep sugar levels under control.

It all depends on the levels of both sugar and cholesterol. These could be kept easily under control by proper monitoring by your doctor. Overdoing would also not be advisable which normally happens if one experiences these things for the first time. Why deprive oneself of something that could be eaten after all. With continuous research done there could be new findings on how to keep these parameters under control. And only a doctor who is in constant touch with these findings would be able to advise you. You could also p0erhaps visit this site http://drmintz.blogspot.com/2010/03/blood-sugar-high-blood-pressure-and.html which could be a guiding factor. All the best.

I am sorry to hear about it but it is good he found out now instead of later. Last month I spent a week in the hospital due to diabetes. I hated it. But it was good to find out to keep it under control. I have been taking metformin. After I did some research online I came to find out that cayenne capsules help with sugar levels. I started taking them with my doctors approval and my sugar has been staying down. But I also havent stopped taking the metformin either. It has helped me from being tired and drowsy all the time. Good luck with the doctors test and godspeed.

Hi Outcast. It was a little scary. And to face this when I am six months pregnant with my second child is even more stressful. The doctor has given a big list of medicines and I make sure that he takes them every day without fail. I am sorry that you are going through that too at this age. But as you said, it is good that he found out now instead of later. I hate to imagine what would have happened had he not got that chest pain and gone to the hospital. I have been thanking all gods that I know of. I would also like to know what are the food which he is supposed to avoid and what is he supposed to eat. He feels hungry all the time and it is heart breaking to see him avoid a lot of food and fruits which he used to enjoy eating earlier.

I am sorry to hear this but you are fortunate to have discovered it now. My husband started to have high blood sugar and now monitors it daily. He isn't diabetic yet but if he continued the way was eating, he probably would have been. He hates taking meds so he is trying to regulate it by decreasing the sugar he eats. He has switched to sugar free chocolate as that is something he can't give up. I too have started sugar free chocolate and really like it more than the regular. One thing we noticed is after exercise his sugar is always normal so that is incentive to exercise regularly. Good luck to you guys. Hope he and you stay healthy! :)

Not only do you have to watch out for sugar levels in foods but also carbs. The more carbs a diabetic eats the higher the sugar levels go. So that means reading more labels. Try as much wheat things as possible. Wheat is better for a diabetic. He should be able to eat all the nonstarchy vegetables he wants. I am in the process of putting some sites together for diabetics and the recipes that is ok for them to eat. I will post it on my page when I am done with it.

I am sorry to hear about your husband. It is good though that the diabetes was caught in time. In my case it was not discovered until I passed out and was hospitalized for two days. My cholestorol, sugar and bloodpressure was out of control. This was two years ago. Now I am on medication and daily excercise. I also changed my eating habits and incorporated some natural foods into my diet. My cholestorol is so good now that at my last doctor's visit my medication was cut in half. Here is what I did: Cut out all white foods except cauliflower. No potatoes (well 1/2 of a small one is o.k,) no white rice, no white pasta, no white flour or white bread, or sugery items Cut out fats especially animal fats. I still use butter on my toast but apart from that only vegetable oil. Cut out all fried foods. Bake, broil or steam all your food. Season with herbs and lemon or lime juice instead of salt Add to your diet or increase: lentils, beans, chick peas, green veggies, whole grain bread and cereal no pork, beef or lamb, only chicken and turkey, except on rare occasions. Fish and some eggs are ok. (3 eggs per week) Add spices: curry, turmeric, ginger, basil, Thai basil, garlic, onions add bitter melon as salad or as vegetable and you can also buy biter melon tea Mentally divide your dinner plate in halfe. Fill one half with vegetables or salda, 1/4 with grains, 1/4 with protein. Eat fruit that are high in fiber and low in sugar. Recently it has also been found that a lot of diabetics have low levels of magnesium. Ask your doctor to have a magnesium level check done. I take 1/2 teaspoon magnesium citrate once a day. You can also add remedies from ayuvedic medicine as long as the doctor is aware that your husband takes these supplements. Most of all excercise brings down blood sugar. I walk everyday as much as 10000 steps. I carry a pedometer to measure my steps. I do Tai Chi 1 hour a week. I do streght training with weights, stretching and aerobic fitness (treadmill) 2 hours a week. Line dancing once every three weeks for 2 hours and now that we have late spring here where I live I am active in a community garden at least 1 full day a week. You will find plenty of good recipes on the internet. Good luck and all the best.

Hi Lindalinda. Thanks for the well explained post. It really helps a lot. I have made a lot of changes in his diet and since I am pregnant and have to watch what I eat, it is easy now to prepare veggies and other healthy food for him which even I can take. He has started walking but only for a very short period of time. That is okay to start with and can be increased slowly. The only constraint is that we cannot totally avoid white rice. So I have reduced the quantity and have added a lot of whole wheat items and pulses and fruits which can be had. Hope he comes back to normal soon.

I am so sorry you and your husband are going through this! My mom had gestational diabetes and it never went away so she now takes insulin. It was rocky at first because they were not sure what level to put her on. But now everything is fine and she is able to cope. I am very glad that now you are aware of what is going on. It sounds bad to say this but it could have been so much worse! At least now you know what is wrong and are working on a solution to help him with his condition. Good luck!

Hi zukichucha. We are thinking the same too. It could have been much worse and it is good that we have found it out now. Thank god! We are actually relieved that it was not a heart problem. Diabetes is something he has to live with and he has no choice. Today we visited the doctor and his sugar levels have come down so much! Another week to go and see how much more he can control.

He is in for the long term care. You have mentioned chest pain and Diabetes. There is a condition in diabetes called keto-acidosis, which has similar symptoms. Hopefully the Doctors have tested for this and ruled it out. The good thing is that you know know that he is suffering from Diabetes. It is not a decease per say, but a condition. It can be a best friend, for long term, or the worst enemy, bringing on complications and killing slowly. What is necessary is basic discipline and regular medication. A brisk walk everyday for not less that 45 min low calorie, balanced protein food and regular medication is what is required. No need for worry, he will be okay soon.

Hi webearn99. Thanks for the info. He has had stomach problems before and I keep suspecting that the pain is because of that. He used to not eat on time and get pain and burning sensation in his stomach. Acidity. But for the past week, he has been having his food and medicines regularly and that is why I am hoping that he will be back to normal soon.

That is what we are all relieved for. It is good that he has found it out now than finding out later after something serious and irrepairable has happened. We have to wait one more day for the results.

That had to have been really scary, but thank goodness they figured this out before it was too late. I don't have any personal experience with diabetes, but I do know that he can live a long, healthy life as long as he pays attention to it.

Hi dawnald. My sentiments exactly. My first expression was relief that it was only diabetes and nothing related to the heart as he had gone to the icu complaining of chest pain in the first place! But then, my mom as well as his have diabetes and so tackling it would not be a problem. It is just that he needs to be more careful about what he eats and how much stress he can take.

Though his mom and my mom are diabetic, their intake is totally different because they are old. I want him to have a very balanced and nutitious diet because of his age as well as his stressful office life. That is why I am looking up new recipes in the net.

hello dev, I am sorry to hear that you are facing this situation. You can start some detox process or all vegetables food depending on his condition or level of diabetes that he had now. My mother in law is also suffering this kind of condition and we changed her diet to all vegetarian and fruits as well, but with professional supervision. She's also taking food supplements to add energy particularly with grapeseed extract capsules. you can surf the net and consult your doctor for a good diet for him my dear. Be strong and don't stress yourself that much

Hi jaiho. You know we eat rice every day and now because of his condition, we have to restrict the intake of rice. That is why I am trying to find dishes and fruits which people with diabetes can take. He is taking vitamin supplements. We have to take a blood test tomorrow and take the results to the doctor in the evening. We are hoping that his sugar levels should have come down. Hopefully. I am just a little worried, thats all. Will be fine. Thanks.

Bless you devijay for being there for him. This sounds really scary and it sounds like you took control and handled all well for him. I would probably ask the doctor for a nutritional guide because I am sure they can recommend what is best for him to be following to prevent any further issues. I am happy to hear that this was caught in time and although so scary that at least you all can be proactive in assuring it does not get worse.

Hi HWG. I am happy too that it has come to our notice sooner than later. I am much relieved that it is not the heart. And the doctor did give a diet chart but I find it too bland and repetetive. I just wanted him to enjoy food without having to worry about diabetes. That is why I am reading as to what to eat and what not to.
