Have you tried to cut or trim your own hair?

I have tried trimming the ends of my hair cause I couldn't stand the split ends. I was successful cause it turned out good and I trimmed it evenly. Later today I need to do some trimming again. I just really don't want to go to the salon and spend $$$ for just some of my ends trimmed, plus the hairstylist is going to cut more than I would tell her to as always, so i'd rather do it myself. I want to keep my hair long. How about you? Have you tried cutting your own hair?

My officemate trimmed his own hair. He got a large forehead. It became more prominent after his hair trimming experiment! He he (Oh look I've made a rhyme)

I've been cutting my own hair for about 3 years or more. I'm a guy and so I wasn't used to doing much with my hair; I'm still not good at cutting it in back. I just cut a little here and a little there when some sticks out and occasionally use a razor on the back of my neck. I don't just try to cut it all at once. I have wavy to curly hair so mistakes don't show much. I think I do as good or better a job as the barbers used to. I started more out of convenience rather than to save money. I have enjoyed the time and money saved.

Yes, i always trim my own hair. In the beginning, i used to trim only my fringe. But now, I trim even the ends of my hair too. I hate to go for the salon because the hair dresser like you mention always cuts my hair too short and i really hate it. I also want to keep my hair long and now i seldom go to the salon anymore because i find most of them are not able to give me the kind of fringe that i want. I rather cute it myself. Plus, save $$ too!

It's always easier to trim the fringes but yeah...why go to the salon if you could DIY? thanks for responding!

That's right. So recently I have been cutting my own hair, both fringe and ends. However, i will still make a visit to the salon when my hairs get too much. Cause I'm unable to do the layering myself! That's the downside.

I cut mine - it's not difficult to get a fringe straight, and since my hair is long and always in a ponytail or plait nobody can see whether the back is straight or not :) I used to cut my daughter's too. She went to the hairdresser for the first time for her 14th birthday, because she wanted a complicated style with layers. I must have saved hundreds of pounds over the years.

Me too, I really wanted to trim my hair but I'm afraid I'll cut it the wrong way. I better search youtube on how to trim my hair efficiently.

I've only cut my own bangs now and then, but I've never seriously tried to actually cut my hair, maybe I have trimmed the ends a little, but nothing drastic because I'm not a professional hair stylist and I don't want to risk ruining my hair, if I ever want to really cut my hair I'd rather go to a pro because saving a few Penny's is not worth a hair disaster.

true. i only trim the ends of my hair also as I can't get a perfect view of my back so i leave it alone and wait til it's time for me to go to the hair salon. Thank you for your response.

That's very right that the stylists cut more than necessary hair ends and that's one reason why I try and refrain from going to salons. I have shoulder length hair and they are quite curly so I can't cut them on my own neither can anyone I know since they tend to curl up and there is always a fear of getting them uneven. I go to salons once every 2-3 months to get a trim.

There's nothing wrong with going to the salon if you need to. You can't take the risk if you knew you can't do it yourself right? We need to be happy with how we look like with our own hairstyle. I wish I could give you a haircut and save you some money :) Have a nice day!

Yeah I do cut my own hair and it is not hard at all. I will never again trust a hair salon because they always end up messing up my hair. I am still trying to regrow my hair form that incident to get long like I had it before, but I still can not get their. Never again will I go to a hair salon because bad experiences and I just can not trust them ever again with my hair because in the past they always just keep messing up my hair.

Yeah, most hairstylists cut hair off big time...like what the heck are they doing? It's so convenient for them cause it's not their own hair and they think they're always right while we're the ones paying them to supposedly get the cut we want. The truth is I think they have this obsessive compulsiveness robotic tendency to just cut, cut, cut....split ends or not or maybe they just feel like it cause they want to show you that they're the ones holding the scissors and you can't do anything about it. haha

Hello gicolet, I never have tried to cut, or trimmer my hair, because I always have scared how would be the result after It. I am familiar with very good women who had trimmer my hairs now more than ten years. When I come to her she always know what I want. And It pays me about six American dollars and about half of hour. It is nice that you cut your hairs own.

oh that's good that you've found a regular hairstylist. I don't. It's hard for me to find a hairstylist that I could really trust...like someone who would really listen to what i want done with my hair. Thank you!

Well, you made me remember my childhood when I did try to cut my own hair for reasons that now eludes me. I did it at that time because I was kinda frustrated and when my mother found out, I was the subject of a long-winding sermon. My mother took me to the local salon and had it fixed, my mother giving me the eye while the hair dresser tries to stifle her laugh. On the other hand, I has kinda angry becuase I was dragged by my mother on the way to the salon. Recently my younger cousin did try to cut her hair by herself and as expected, my aunt broke a little loose. She even told of my little escapade when I was young. But for now, I stick to the hairdresser.

omg....i did cut my own hair too when i was a child. Well first off i cut my little doll's hair thinking it would grow back. hahaha i was 5 back then i think. When i was 10 I dared to cut my hair cause i was so annoyed of the waves around it. I went to school and 2 of my classmates noticed it. They said it didn't look even so they got the scissors and trimmed my hair out in the classroom. lol They were good friends of mine so I trusted them. I think that was the reason why i got so interested on haircutting. My aunt used to have a hair salon and i remember to just watch her doing her customers hair. I guess we shouldn't focus on the little mistakes we made when we were just little kids but focus on what we've learned and how we grew from it. Thanks for sharing your story :)

The only hair I can manage to trim myself is my ear hair using a pair of tweezers! I get my girlfriend to cut my hair now since I cannot afford to get it cut as I cannot see the back of my head easily. I notice there is a single handheld hair trimmer device on the market, though it looks like it only really gives you a close cut, but I do wonder how well that might work if I didn't mind looking like a bit of a skinhead. I remember years ago they came out with an attachment to your vaccuum cleaner, not sure if those are still around or not..
13 May 11
I'm pretty sure they are not around anymore, BraveNewDawn. The power of the modern vacuum cleaners would take yer head off! ;)

I haven't been to a salon in years and stopped going to barber shops about five years ago. My husband used to cut my hair when I had it very short, but I always do my own dusting and trimming. It's much cheaper and more effective, since I know I'll always get the look I want. Even if I screw up, I have no one to blame but myself!

I have been guilty in the past of trying to cut my own hair. it was not a good task for me to take on. I have found that my skills do not lie in haircutting. i had to go to a salon to have them fix the job i did.

I bet he was proud :) I cut my daughters' hair and they love it. I give them layers as they asked for and they told me to work in a salon. I used to cut my parents and brothers' hair too in the past. They love it cause they save some money. haha All i did was watch and copy how hairstylists cut hair whenever I go to salons before. I guess i should have really worked in a salon but cutting my own hair is more challenging for me. Thanks for responding!

I have been cutting my own hair for years, and not just trimming. I've saved £100s! Fortunately, I have a very straight eye. All you need is nerve, a steady hand, one mirror to look at the front in and one to hold at the back, and be able to wield a good pair of hairdressing-scissors! I met a lady years before whose hair always looked perfect and when she told me she always did it herself I thought,'I can do that!' and have never darkened the door of an over-priced salon since! My hair has been every length imaginable, all done by moi! ;)
