Opening the flood gates to protect New Orleans

It seems that the decision has been made to flood some farm land to save parts of the cities of New Orleans and Baton Rouge. We all know the reason is to flood farm land to save lives and property of other people. It sounds like a noble cause, but is it? The communities up river built levies to protect their people and property. Over the years the levee and dike system has worked but now the people in the cities are threatened because they have built up more and more of the city in parts of the city where flooding would normally occur each year. Part of New Orleans is as much as 10 feet below the level of the river and they keep building there and letting people live in those areas. Now the people up stream are paying the price for the bad decisions of city officals down river. Farmers are seeing their fields flooded and may not be able to plant a crop this year; communities will lose millions in income and busienss because of the loss of the farm income while the people of New Orleans and Baton Rouge are protected. Is it alright to ruin some people to protect others and should the people of Baton Rouge and New Orleans have to make the tough decisions and move people out of the areas that would normally be flooded every year?

I think the whole situation is awful, and I find it very upsetting. I do think the right choice is made here, but I feel absolutely awful for the people that will suffer for this choice. even if it's less people than would be suffering if that choice hadn't been made. I hope that there will be enough support for those people who will lose so much, to help them get back on their feet afterwards. New Orleans brings in a lot of money, and I do hope that they remember the people who are taking the hit for them, do something to give back. I know they still have their own troubles, but this is a big sacrifice being made on their behalf. I'll be perfectly honest, I have a rather full on obsession with New Orleans. part of the reason that it's so painful to see what is happening in Louisiana. it would hurt me worse emotionally to see the city harmed further, they're still recovering from Katrina. it's unfortunate that so much of the area is floodplain. but people do that. in the UK, where the weather is rarely dangerous, we still quite often see estates of new homes becoming flooded as they are on floodland. and it's ridiculous that they build them there. but with such long established places, I do think they warrant protection. I understand that a lot of the flood defences aren't up to standard, and I think that more should be done to get them as good as they can possibly be. my heart goes out a hundred times over to everyone who will lose their home and their livelihoods because of this decision. I hope that everyone will think of them and give to charity to help them recover from this.

The problem is that the people up river have done the right thing and in New Orleans even after Katrina they are letting people go back and build in a place that is 10 feet below the level of the river. The city officals did all within their power to get the Super Dome up and running so they could play football yet people are still without a place to live. The Federal Government has spent Billions to help them and most of the money can not be accounted for. Why should people suffer because the citizens of New Orleans have made a series of bad decisions and they keep reelecting the same people. You would have thought that after Katrina they would not let people build in those areas that are below the level of the river, but they did not and are now looking at another disaster.
