What is the relevance of the ranking of discussion?

I noticed that the discussions posted on myLot are ranked. Can anybody tell me the mechanics of ranking? How is it relevant? Thanks!

In 'New' they are ranked in order of posting, in 'Recent' they are in order of the most recent activity. Nobody is clear how 'Today's Top' and 'Hot' works. The others are fairly obvious.
