I'm no expert, but from my observations: Most of us have body clocks that regulate our sleep. Although I can't speak for those poor souls who suffer from genuine insomnia, as opposed to mild sleep difficulties, which we can all get. This means that all being well, we all eventually get the sleep we need. For example, if we have a bad night, we either catch up in the day, or the following night. Our body clocks see to that. Also, if we decide to change our sleep routines, our body clocks can adjust. For example, if we sleep certain hours at night, but also enjoy a siesta during the day, our body clocks will see that this routine continues. However, it's not always easy to sleep when we want it. For example, we might have awful trouble falling asleep, or staying asleep. Our body clocks will help us catch up; but we may struggle with sleep difficulties, and tiredness. If you want to sleep in the afternoon from 1 to 4, in time your body clock will adjust to this routine and help you do this. But it may be hard: especially if you are stressed, or have worries, or you are nervous you will be awoken by noise during the day. Or desperately need this sleep, and get stressed out about it. It's not always easy from my experience to sleep just when we want. The only way to help the sleep process is relaxation; try and relax is the best advice I can give. Stop fretting about the sleep; just lie down and relax, and try to think nice relaxing thoughts. Play an agreeable scenario in your mind. Hopefully in time you will find you can sleep for those periods you wish for.

Dear Zeith! I also need to have short sleeps many a times because my profession it demands it during the season! I am a Veterinarian by profession and I work on a Stud Farm i the capacity of resident Vet., which makes me to attend any case at any time. since we breed Thoroughbreds and horses deliver their babies invariably during the night hours I need to stay awake mostly during the night times and next day after attending my early morning work I want to take rest for few hours in the afternoon! Like you said sometimes because of some mental tension or stressed out condition it become impossible to get a sound sleep! But then one thing works for me after having my lunch I just walk for 5 to 10 minutes then having gone to bed I completely relax myself and keep my brain away from any thoughts and start counting back from 100 to 1 gradually! Till the date I am successful with this experience of mine and I always fall asleep before reaching to the number 1! Please try this trick and I am sure if done with patience it should work for you! Please respond back after giving a trial to it! Hope to have a positive reply from you! All the best! Thanks for the discussion!

Hi. zeith88. Welcome to myLot! Have you ever tried listening to some soft and soothing music? Do you have a soft and comfortable mattress to sleep on? I think that you should try to drink something warm while you are sitting up, this will help you to make you feel sleepy. I have also heard that acupuncture bracelets helps into allowing a person to go to sleep quickly. I hope that you will be able to rest properly soon.

Well for me at least, I think that the best way to fall asleep quickly is to listen to soothing music. If you leave soothing relaxing music running on your pc or laptop it is helpful for most to fall asleep. There are some people though that cannot sleep unless their is complete silence in the room and in some cases their entire apartment or house.I usually fall asleep in most cases using this method, and have tried other methods but found this one to be the most effective.Classical music, or soothing music can help.Just get a program that can repeat 10 or so songs over in over in a loop and im sure you will enjoy a relaxing nights sleep.

Sometimes it's hard to get sleep specially when you are very tired and there's lot things on your mind that hinder you to rest. Feeling like your body wanna rest but your mind is still processing lots of thoughts. When this happens to me, I listen to musics to unload thoughts and have peace of mind.

Fallow these simple steps: 1. Avoid coffee and tea after 5 pm. 2. Take 2 tablespoon of Honey at 12:30 pm. Don't guld down, just lick, and taste well. then swallow slowly. 3. Relax yourself. 4. Say yourself that you will fall in good sleep, and believe in it. You can get a good sleep every day! Hope it helps.

To be completely honest, I find that a physical days work (notice I didn't say hard :D hehe) is the key to a relaxing and non-forced sleep. I'm quite surprised that after you work in the morning you are not yet somewhat exhausted to sleep between 1-4 pm. You might try exercising a bit before then and drink a bottle of water. That usually does it for me.
