...can anybody be a writer?

This was my niece's question to me when she asked about what I'm doing for a living. She says that I had a 'comfortable' job since I don't do much and all I do is sit in front of my computer and type. Little did see know how many times I tried to pull my hair just to write for a particular assignment and how many times I cursed my handler aloud. I know that majority of writers consider this profession as a tough one and others look at this profession as something below theirs. My niece tells me that she wants to work like me but I don't encourage her becuase she's more comfortable in clothes and accessories. She's a natural when it comes to make-up, even at a young age. But I will support her if this is where her heart resides. So fellow writers, can anybody a writer in the full definition of the word?

It seems so, when someone have a problem with the gramatics they can hire someone else to correct them, they can also have the editor to fix many problem as they are going to read it and become professional or hire someone to do that. Agatha Christie, in a point was narrating to her secretary to type the book for her.

Yes, that 'someone' used to be me, katie0, as I was a professional proof-reader and copy-editor! No, writing is not easy and not everyone can do it well. I have spent hours rewriting very bad manuscripts! I also decided to have a go at writing a book myself, which I achieved last year. It was bloody hard work! I do love writing but it is, like any art, very underrated by most people. It takes an enlightened soul to realise the blood, sweat and copious tears that go into any good writing!

being a writer requires a lot of patience, creativity and thinking capability also a lot of knowledge is required if u really want to become a huge sucess also, one of the important qualities of a writer is their way of expressing their view(it should be more understandable and enjoyable) people with these qualities will shine as a writer

It takes a lot of patience, imagination and persistence to be a good writer. I don't feel that everyone has the ability to be a good writer, especially when you have to grit your teeth and bite your tongue with copy editors who insist that they are right and you are wrong. When you sit and pull your hair out trying to meet the deadline on a project that just won't come together, would make most people quit. A good writer takes the good with the bad and the best way to calm us, is to write for ourselves. After a grueling day typing out pages of articles, just typing out a poem and getting praise from friends, makes it all worthwhile.

Anybody can be a writer. But talent is required to be a good one.

I guess anybody can write, but it needs ideas, discipline and then you still do not know if anybody wants to read what you wrote, it may not even get published. I have been writing on my second book for a while now, I get really into it for a while and then its like I have a block and I have to wait until it all flows again. Its not that easy to be a writer, and it is even harder to be a published writer and a successful writer.

no, i dont think just anyone can write well. sure people can write a sentence or even a paragraph but it takes special people to be able to write and grip the audience.

Hi,jeanneyvonne well,I don't think so.writing is not just about typing and wording...much more important,I think it's the experience of true life... so the talent in wording and experience in life is necessary for a good writer. not just sitting in front of a notebook and typing... and not everyone is interested to be a writer..for me,I think writing is boring..^^

Hello, Jeanneyvonne. Yes, anyone can be a writer, but it takes something a bit more special to be a good writer, and only those who can turn out good work will earn a respectable living from their writing. Yes, it's a tough profession, but it's a rewarding one as well. I wouldn't want to do anything else - even though some days I feel like heaving the laptop through the window!

What is a writer anyway? In the full definition of the word? =P I think anybody can write. But not everyone can be a writer. I have this idea that a writer should have this ability to convey their thoughts clearly through their words. And not everyone can do that clearly enough. And even among writers, their abilities can vary. Some may be more apt to write news and documents and non-fiction, etc. Not everyone can weave tales and write fiction effectively.

I don't think anybody can be a writer because being a writer requires a lot of work and energy. Sometimes it can take a whole day just to finish one piece, especially if you have writer's block. Which tends to happen to sometimes. Then, you have to edit and re-edit and re-edit. Making sure this little piece is perfect.

i think everybody can be anybody, but few would just be successful enough. i dream to be a part time writer. sad to say, i find this dream too difficult. it's either i can't think of anything to write, or ifever i can, i write a terrible piece. while anybody can write, only few can be a (professional) writer. i know how difficult it would be to write a full article. much less on how to choose a topic. i still try to live that dream, though. good thing mylot is here, i don't feel too frustrated about it already. =)

I think so, everyone can be a writer. But, to be a good writer, everyone must learn the technique and spend a lot time to write. Write is not easy but not that hard too. As many as we trainee our self to write so the quality of our writing will be much better. So, nice try and learn to write??

Hi Jeanneyvonne, I think it is the same question as: can anybody be a doctor? the answer is yes. most people have the intelligence and roughly the same chance to become anyone in any profession they want. but i agree with you. it's better to pursue a career in which our heart resides. it will give us enjoyment while generating good financial income. we will rarely feel the burden simply because we already get into the flow. anybody can be a writer in any type of writing that he* chooses. however, it will be easier for him to advance his career in writing industry if he already has a natural ability or talent in writing, and if he does his best to be the best writer in a subject he chooses. remember that talent is only 10% of success and efforts account 90% of success. if he does not have this talent, he also can be as successful as a talented writer, as long as he has passion and tries very hard to be the best. this type of person needs what you say: the place where his heart resides. because once he knows that his heart resides in writing, he will do anything to be successful in this job field. * i use the word "he" for simplicity reason to replace the word "anybody". actually, as we know, anybody can be he or she.

Do not know why people have the impression that anyone can write. Are readers, on the one hand, and writers, on the other side. You can not ask a reader to turn into a writer, just because they read a book a day, week, month, year! On the other hand, the situation is different for a writer - or at least I think so - it should read, to inform the reader wants to know why, why aspire to make their opinions about daily life for us could kidnap for a few minutes or hours a day. Writer and reader are on opposite side, but both the writer and readers are conditioned to each other. First depends on the existence of the second. The writer is the one used in this relationship, the writer no reader should be done copywriter or bank clerk. You have to be cult, documented, and perverse or cool. It is completely at the mercy of the reader, if you know how to approach it, if it captures his work, it makes sense, when he won. But if the reader did not come close to irretrievably lost. We could say that the reader-writer relationship is like love-love relationship, but is a relationship in which the writer offers everything, and the reader gets without giving anything in return other than maybe a smile, a frown and a good word. Writing is an act of courage to open your soul, put your feelings on the table, ideas, fantasies, all they ask for courage.
