Please help??? We keep getting slugs and snails in my living room. They seem to come out at night and i'am not just talking about one or two..... loads!! We live in a council house and we no that this house is incredibably damp but i cant figure out where or they are coming in. It driving me nuts. We have put down salt and this has not worked. We have extremely thick cob stone walls so they cant be getting through that. We do have a corner in our living room which is still very damp due to the water works company having a pipe burst a year ago and this penetrated through our wall in the corner, whcih was a nightmare because that corner of the living room is 5 foot under ground. Is this why they keep coming in???? Does any one else have this problem and does any one know how to solve the problem? The council have acknowledged that this problem is due to the damp and they will be starting major repairs on the property very soon but in the mean time i really need answers on how to deal with this problem. I have five children and a dog and they dog likes to eat them which i have been told can make them ill due to a disease that slugs can carry which can be life threatening to dogs. Please help..

That's got to be , what, yucky! I mean, it's ok, mind, just OK, to see a snail in the garden or somewhere. But LOADS, that too in the house? I'd move out the other day! Since it's not the most practical of ideas, I'd suggest you call in someone from pest-control.

I know, it horrible. Making some phone calls in the morning to see how quickly this problem along with many others in this house is going to be sorted then i have decided to pack up the children and move out until this problem is sorted. My husband has gone against my better judgement and put salt down where there is serious dampness in one corner to see if by the morning if this is where they are getting.

well it goes without saying you did the right thing calling the council. for now you need to keep your family out of the rooms were the slugs come. if thats not possible then wear socks and shoes around the house and make sure that if you see a slug that you do use gloves and pick it up and bin it

hi Rainbowws, unfortunately it is not possible to keep my children out of the room but they have been told not to pick them up, my husband has been picking themup with his bear hands, could this cause a problem??? I know this probably sounds silly as they are only slugs but.... it does worry me.

I have no idea on how to get a quick fix for your problem but hopefully the council will sort it out. I once ate a small snail by accident and it was not pleasant. All the best

Yeah the snail was a bad one got mixed up with a toffee crisp bar and I mistook it for a rouge piece of chocolate covered rice in my pocket. I hope they sort it out for you soon. But then the council can be very slow to act.

Snails in living room? Please check up what your neighbors are doing to handle such issues. May be they can throw some light on this. use some disinfectants. Snails move at snailspace. You can catch and throw them out. take care. Welcome to Mylot.

I have the same problem. My quirky cottage was a former shop and is very old. I'm still working on the slugs, which I think come in from the garden because the back and front doors fit badly. I also don't think the cellar helps. I don't often get the really big ones but the little black ones seem to squeeze through any gap. (I found one on the toilet-seat!) I would never touch them with my hands and use a lolly-stick to pick them up and throw them away. If I could think of a solution that would really work, and didn't cost an arm and a leg I would gladly pass it on.

This happens in my house all the time.I don't really mind slugs though so it doesn't bother me.I presume they are getting in under the door so maybe you should try blocking the small space between the door and the floor with something like a towel before you go to bed at night.

slugs eating donut - a bunch of slugs eating a donut on my sidewalk
Wow I have never heard of slugs being inside peoples homes. I know I certainly wouldnt want them in my home. If they were a huge problem in my home I would probably call an exterminator. After it rains or early in the morning when its very moist out with dew there will be a lot of slugs. My son was eating a donut outside one day on his way from the van into the house. He dropped the donut on the sidewalk and I looked out a little while later and the donut was being devoured by slugs. It was so disgusting. Heres a photo I took of it.

Check what type of snails they are. Most of them are edible. Even if you donĀ“tt want to eat them yourself, Maybe they can be a good source of protein for your pets. As your vet. I have never heard of snails carrying diseases.
