What did you think about a programmer career?

Many friends makes me feel bad , because they say that I can't get much money from programmer career and they think that are smart , because they choose ingineer career.
Friends what did you think about this situation?

im a computer engineer ;) . Programming is great.But its sad that the most companies make newbies in this field work to hell.No surprise why many quit after some years.Whatever i like programming very much.

The career path is irrelevant: your salary will depend on where you work, what you're doing and a bit of luck to end up in the right company.
In my experience, engineers often have big mouths and inflated egos, too.
