You know I am trying to shed some pounds for health´s sake (as well as beauty
) and I´m always reading what can help with the mediterranean diet I´m looselly following.Today I read about two tips for lowering those saturated oils and eat foods that fill. Diets tend to give way to anxiety if you have a lonely lettuce leaf in your plate.
Two chefs gave their opinion as to forget butter to cook and use either grapeseed oil or olive oil. And to fill our tummies and add a touch of class to diffrent dishes, ground nuts are the idea. So, instead of bread (no more yummy croutons!), we can put some nuts for a special efect.
What are your tips for healthy, filling yet low calorie cooking? Help me, help us. A lot of us are in need of ideas.

I don't keep butter (or margarine) in the house. I use olive oil for almost everything that calls for butter. Many people who eat at our house notice a difference in a positive way, and are surprised when I tell them of the change. I also use ground turkey instead of ground beef for many recipes. For the croutons, can you use whole grained breads to make your own?

You have given me a great idea. I will stop buying butter. I did that with chocolate when I discovered, years ago, that I was addicted to it. If it´s not in the house, I can use substitutes. I grind my own meat and I can make it half and half for some dishes. Thanks for the ideas, friend!

In the summer, when it's hot, we frequently have a large salad, crusty whole-grain bread, and olive oil with herbs (to dip the bread in). Can't get much healthier than that. I've made brownies with whole wheat, substituting apple sauce for the oil (the oil is only to keep them moist while baking). If you decide to try these, cut them into individual portions and freeze. Then only take out one serving at a time. If you can....

I´ll check it. We don´t have cashews here though so they are very expensive.

Last weekend, my aunt made a peanut treat for us. She toasted the peanuts with a little oil and put a dash of sugar at the end of the process. They were crunchy and wonderful as appetisers

Hi marguicha,
If you are up to shed some fat and not so spirited to go to gym or fast walking you look at your food.
Cut down on red meat or meat containing fats. Do not eat rice or product from rice.
Drink as much water as you can. When you feel hungry take water not any junk food.
Lessen the quantity of food you usually would take.
Banana or papaya or guava are good fruits which are cheap and available.
Presently I am following these and getting some good result.

My diet prefers legumes instead of rice or pasta as they have more proteins, vitamins and minerals as the others which are mainly carbohidrates. I don´t usually eat what is normally called junk food as I don´t keep any at the house.
Thanks for sharing!

Well you are doing what everybody is doing to shed a little kilos, but what are you cooking, healthy diets or otherwise you might add weight instead of losing wieght. Watch out. I cannot help but to say that I try to cut down meals and snack in between meals as a way of controlling my weight. I am not a good exercise man, cook or the lot.

I love to cook, but I can make healthy food for a diet without being it boring to eat. I just ate a small dish of lentils as lunch and will eat a lettuce salad as a snack. I don´t buy dressings for the salads as they do in the US. I make my own and now it´s olive oil, lemon or vinegar, salt and oregano. I will add a tiny bit of parmesan cheese if I feel like it. Not too much though.

The mediterranean diet is mainly about eating lots of veggies and fruits; legumes, fish and poultry for proteins and carbohidrates and little red meats, no butter (olive oil instead) and no sweets or sodas.
It is slow, but it is habit maker.

Honestly, I don't do diet. But I do exercise. Mostly running, stretching, and swimming. My dad is like a battalion commander and is very strict in his weight loss program. Our policy at home is "eat what you want, but you have to work hard to lose it."
Also try moving your dinner an hour earlier. It helps a lot.

I did a lot of excercise just for fun when I was your age. But I´m 65 years old now and joints hurt, even when you walk
. Swimming is better, but it is not so easy to go to a pool all the time.

Hahah.. Sorry I can't help but laugh. But anyway I think mild exercise will do. My 73 year old grandma still exercise to this day. And she definitely look smart and younger. Goodluck with your diet and I wish you good health. :)

I haven´t heard of that one, but I guess all diets that center on salads instead of sweets are good

I am not on a watch everything type diet because I have lost way too much, so what I do is I do supplement things like no mayo, fore go the thousand island and use vinaigrette instead. Smaller portions than I did before but I do eat 3 - 5 times a day.
We do not use butter at all and do steam a lot of veggies. Smaller portions of high carb and meats and higher portions of veggies and salads for us here at home.
I also drink lots of water which tends to fill me up quite a bit.

You just described the mediterranean diet!
The good thing about it is that you change slowly your way of eating and you are eating a well balanced meal instead of fasting.

I drink herbal tea before going to bed. It helped me on my digestion.
Only 1 cup of rice during lunch, none at all during dinner and plenty of little snacks in between lunch and dinner.
They say that you need to adopt a diet method that is conducive to you, simply put it must be "personalized". It worked for me, I lost few pounds during 2 months of religiously adhering to this method.

It seems that every good diet says small portions and a couple of light snacks between meals.
