Why do we get pets?

Is it for a companion? For your kids to learn responsibility? Just because they are cute and adorable when they play? Recently we adopted 2 kittens from an animal shelter. We got them because my kids have never had a real pet and we want them to learn a bit of responsibility. Plus my husband and I wanted a pet. What are your reasons for wanting or getting a pet? Please leave as many details a possible. I dont want 1 word answers or I will give you a negative rating and I will not comment.

I think the main reason I got my first dog was because my daughter begged for it. I ended up being the caretaker for the dog she wanted. Now I don't think I can imagine a day without him. I got my 2nd dog because a friend was trying to find him a home so he wouldn't have to go to the animal shelter. And once again I fell in love with another dog. Now my life is complete.

Awww how sweet. Yeah we got the kittens in part because of my kids but my husband and I wanted a pet too. We make shure the kids take part in caring for them. They help put food in there dish and fresh water. We even got the scoopable litter so they can help with keeping the litter clean for the cats and for our noses. LOL

i think maybe its all of those reasons.. but one of the major reasons is because my daughter wouldnt stop crying until i brought that kitty home lol And i loved it as well (love black cats and when i saw this kitty, i feel inlove too.. ) I think animals are great for kids, not only responsibility, but it teaches them that other animals and people have feelings, and can feel pain etc. Its also great for kids with special difficulties, my son doesnt like being alone in the bathroom when having a bath or going to the toilet, so he takes the cat with him everywhere. (poor kitty). Our oldest black kitty, was a rescue case as well (i have my animal science certificate, so i work volunteer with rescue animals) and i ended up adopting him.

Your right. We are trying to teach our 2yr old to be carefull with the kittens cause she tends to hurt them. I am just glad they are babies and can get used to the abuse. They tend to use me as there salvation LOL

I got my cat for a companion and she was too adorable to pass up. She was so cuddley and loveable that she stole my heart when I saw her. I've had her for 10 years now and she has been the best cat I've have. Still very cuddley and loving, and so playful. I get pets for companions and I love to play with animals and of course to save them from the shelters.

I love cats. They make you feel warm and fuzzy. My first two cats would jump on me when I was not in a good way (going on a rant!!!!). They would lick my face and neck to calm me down. I find that my kitten is picking up this trait. My cat Benta is my shoulder warmer. She loves to sit on my shoulder or lap. I wouldn't trade my cats for all the tea in China.

KC - KC
First of all, great comment about giving detail or negative rating! We should all start putting that on our discussions!I wanted my first dog KC because I love animals. My partner promised me that I could have a dog when we got our own house and we did last year. So I started looking for a dog. I almost got one too without his consent, but the dog had just been adopted. I then told him about it. So, he knew that I was not going to take no for an answer. Then a sign popped up in the neighborhood for free puppies. I wanted a Beagle..what was the likelihood that it was beagle puppies. So I waited and pointed out the sign to my partner and had him call. They were beagle mixes!! Of course, he could not resist KC when he laid eyes on her. Thus, I got my dog. But to answer the question more straight forward. I got KC because I needed someone to talk to when the kids were at school. She is a great listener! But I also wanted my kids to learn compassion for animals and realize that animals have feelings too. As for my second dog that we just got...KC needed a friend.:)

ok mom just kidding. I too get my kittens from the shelter. I dont think you should get apet to learn responsibility. It is not fair to the animal. You get a pet to love and play with. They always know when you are sad or feeling down. Mind do anyway.
