Helium is the chemical element known as a noble gas i read some where thatHelium was made in the first few minutes of the universe, when temperatures everywhere were high enough for nuclear fusion to occur. it is used in gas balloons due to its light waith..as its lighter than air ..
the phenomenon of voice change due to breathing of helium is a very funny an interesting phenomenon to me...
now the reason....the reason of voice change due to breathing of helium is many due to its light weight.. after breadthing helium your sound will go up as the sound waves moves faster the the normal air....
you can fine more about it in books or internet..
nice discussion topic..

Very correct information on helium
The balloons use it too.
Happy posting, cheers.

No, I have not and I won't try it either. We don't know what will be the effect on our system if ever we do.I have read that a small amount inhaled can change temporarily the timbre and quality of human voice. It says helium is a colorless, odorless, tasteless, non-toxic, inert, monatomic gas that heads the noble gas group in the periodic table.Nice discussion my lady

Marinerpulak covered most of the science for you. I would like to add it is relatively safe to take a quick drag from a balloon, but never, ever take a shot from a high pressure tank. The high pressure can cause helium to be forced into the blood through the lungs and create strokes.
And, yes, I have tried helium from a balloon to become squeeky.

It can be very dangerous. Don't do it! Breathing in pure helium, either from a balloon or from a tank, deprives the body of oxygen. When helium is in the lungs, it creates a diffusion gradient that washes oxygen out. When you inhale helium, your oxygen level drops and can drop to a dangerously low level in a matter of a few seconds.
The chances of dieing from asphyxiation if you're sucking from a helium balloon is lower than from a tank. There is only so much helium in a balloon and it's at low pressure. You might pass out, but that's good because your body's oxygen levels will start to return to normal.
It's really dangerous to suck helium out of a pressurized tank that some people rent for parties. If the gas comes in too quickly, your lungs can burst and hemorrhage and you die. Don't do it.

I have personally tried it before many times and it was really funny because I have a deep voice and it will suddenly turn into a high pitch one!
It can really make me happy all day! I really love the times when I was young and played with my friends by inhaling helium.
