ANZAC biscuit recipe help

Australia

I have made a new American friend over at Gather who loves our Aussie Anzac biscuits so I gave him a fool proof recipe (I guess they are all basically the same) but this friend of mine is asking about the golden syrup - he isn't sure what it is & I don't know if golden syrup is widely available in the US...he was wanting to know if maple syrup would do instead?? I told him I wasn't sure because even though it has the same consistancy as golden syrup, it doesn't taste the same. Can someone help me with this little dilemma?

Apparently golden syrup is a British thing. It can most likely be found in the larger cities like N.Y. and Chicago. I had to look it up. Best answer I received was from here: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/269518 I am going to check and see if Amazon has it, probably does. But you can look for yourself too.

Hmm...that's interesting...I know it comes from sugar cane so I thought it would be widely available over the world lol.

Golden syrup is definitely not in any grocery in my little 35,000 population town. Indianapolis, Louisville and Nashville would be the cities most likely to have it and those are all at least two hours away from me. I checked at Amazon and it is sold there. Not too expensive either. Amazon is my grocer when I can't find things here.

Thanks for that, I will let my friend know that he can buy it on Amazon.

Just as an aside...golden syrup is sticky like honey whereas maple syrup is runny
