Is social networking a good or a bad thing?

There are many social networking groups popping up ehre , there and everywhere on the internet. I do have a Facebook account because it allows me to keep in touch with my children who lead busy lives. But sites such as Twitter and Facebook seem to be in the press all of the time for the wrong reasons. The press seems to be fixated on what Twitter is going to reveal next! So are you a social networker? and if so what do you think about sites like facebook, twitter and Myspace?

Social networking sites aren't really my thing, and I'd think twice about allowing my kids to have their own profiles just yet. However, I imagine the people who have the biggest problem are the employers who's employees spend all day 'networking' instead of working!

Hi Moo Yes I agree with what you say, social networking sites were not even heard of when I was achild, we went to Brownies followed by Girl guides! But facebook and bebo and sites such as these seem to have taken off with a bang and the site owners must be happy to say the least! If I had any young children I would be mortfied to find out that they had a facebook account that i knew nothing about. I know my neice has two accounts, she may be sixteen but it still shows that there are things that she would rather keep to herself!

It's always going to be good and bad, from my perspective, I feel from the disadvantages outweigh the advantages. People are spending hours and hours on the social networking websites and it does get the point where it becomes an addiction, but they have to check it at least several times a day otherwise they can't sleep, then let it all this time, but the computer for about everybody else's lives, their friend and family, which is great to have this because it is the very best intentions, but why not actually spent the time actually eat up with these people finding out how they really ? Anyone can post photos and it doesn't always show the full story...

I love your point of view, it is really interesting. I find that a couple of my nephews spend hours on Facebook and they are way into their twenties! in fact you will notice that they have their mobile phones linked to Facebook, i have no idea how you would do that but i imagine it may be through an application. The entire world seems to be Facebook mad. I wonder how long this craze will last?

I feel everything has positives and negatives. The thing is when something is developed or discovered, it is always done with intention to do good. But there are people who can misuse it. But that does not mean the thing is bad. Social networking has huge list of positives to choose from. The best thing is fast communication which can never be neglected. It is so easy to get in touch with your friends on the go and that is sometimes very advantageous. Facebook for example can be used to communicate with your friends and family. But that is just a part of the bigger picture. You can share ideas, debate learn and do a lot more on facebook. The best thing about social networking site is that you can get in touch with people from different geographical locations personally, share experience and so I feel it has huge potential.

I never use myspace, rarely use twitter and only really use facebook for keeping in touch with people but, I do think some people are completely stupid when it comes to revelaing too much information on social netowrk sites! They can be safe places if people use them right but, sadly many use them without making sure they are secure or revealing too much information!
