Since I've already posted before about English with proper grammar that is equivalent to intelligence which indeed many people are disagree on it. Now I want to know from others especially to the Filipinos like me that how come if you are English speaker it is like status symbol that you are elite or class, rich, educated, you have breeding with right manner and proper conduct, and most likely you are NOSE BLEED!
It is like English? then people must be scared of that. Yes I understand because there are still many Filipinos that are not fluent into this language as second dialect. Then if you are not speaking in English you are cheap or in Filipino term "Jologs"! They really tend to laugh and discriminate other Filipinos that are not fluent in English. But as I observe to others there are really other people who loathe themselves for being a Filipino. They are using the English language to prove something on themselves that they thought they are already smart but for real their content is non sense at all. There was a time when I was still in the office all of us are in joking time. Some encourages me to have debate with them about the network war like Kapuso and Kapamilya. Then someone insisted that "Sige nga! magsagutan kayo ENGLISH!!! (Just make rebuttals to each other in ENGLISH!) What the heck?
Are they treating an English language like a weapon? Maybe this is a weapon for other Filipinos that are social climbers.

hi metatronik,
I'm not a Filipino and maybe I don't really understand what is going on about English in Philippines. but when people in your country tend to make english as a status symbol, it could be a good sign for english development there. it means everybody will do their best to be able to use proper english.
i'm sad that it does not seem to happen in my country Indonesia. most people there do not speak english, even basic english. the younger generation can speak very good english, but they are just a small minority. i hope someday indonesians will strive to use proper english for their social status. because it will motivate people to use english more and more.
about the non-sense content, i believe people will make the content more meaningful as they learn english more and more. otherwise, they will be ashamed to keep using improper english.

I am bit disagree with your point about being status symbol that could be good sign for English development. It is true that we give importance for English as our second language since it is universal. However as I am talking about status symbol there are Filipinos who tend to brag themselves whenever they talk with the fluency of English. I've been hearing some people like this "you know what this kid is smart because he/she knows how to speak English" as in huh?
Okay fine that kid can speak other than our native languages and at times it is awesome to hear them like when they are playing they can speak in English.
The non sense content that I am talking about is that even if that person have been using the most perfect grammatically correct with high faluted words that he/she have been using in English terms the point is the delivery of message will be still non sense.

Oh okay, now I understand why you feel upset about this situation. I hope they will realize that English is just a means of communications, not a way to measure child's intelligence or to climb the social ladder.

Actually my friend you correct but some are learn small english thinking that he/she is in the high mountain of power. We are lucky that mostly Filipinos are speak english or understand english. Like here in Saudi Arabia filipinos here are high level in other nations because of english capability of Filipinos but some are over acting.... I don't know if they are still considered theirselves a Filipinos... see you around

I don't know as well if they are still proud for being a Filipino. Well I don't want to judge but at times I can't avoid of thinking about it. Other Filipinos have even thought that when they speak English then they are already in the high level that others can't do the equivalent of their level. Too shallow.

I believe if they want to be respected by other people then they should respect themselves as well for being a Filipino and should be proud of it.

So being Filipino, we should stand and act as Filipinos, see some country like Japan they don't care whether other people understand them because they always used their native language on thier all activities outside their country. But Filipinos I don;t think soo - where is Jose Rizal famous says... thanks

i don't think it makes sense telling that those who can speak the English language as easy as eating a pie have edge over those who lacks the ability, or has a better status.
i don't believe it is a status symbol. it does not make you above any other. it is an advantage, yes, but it does not define a person's status, if status is meant here as the one you defined "elite or class, rich, educated, you have breeding with right manner and proper conduct". not all who can speak the language fall in that category.
also, we should not stop learning. if you aim for the goal of learning the language, so be it. but it must not be done with the goal of undermining others because you are already becoming fluent with it.
also, we should not stop anybody from speaking the language, or insult him because he is speaking the language when he is a Filipino, especially if they do it right. it is their choice and there is nothing wrong with people who wanted to convey their thoughts with the language. if they feel comfortable with it, leave them be.

I totally agree that we should not really stop learning this kind of language as we can use it everywhere especially when it comes to profession as universal language. I also believe that it wouldn't really fall into category of rich, class, elite, educated, prim and proper and other good values. But then as I could see it in other Filipinos if you can't speak English fluently then they would think that you are weak even you as a person. I don't know how lame they are but I have seen so many people who are into this.

Hello Metatronik,
Status Symbol
? if United States, Britain, Canada and Australia were not economically and influencially powerful, do you even think English would be a popular language? when Spain and Portugal were more powerful during their time, Latin and portugese were the most popular language
you know i'd be honest in this case, when ever i speak english, it is when i panic or feel disorient with my answers. but the truth is I despise the language sometimes. because i never learned my native tongue and other native tounges out there.
. any one who thinks it's a status symbol simply they couldn't learn their own or they despise their own native tongue and fears of getting rejected if they speak of another filipino language.

I really understand the fact that English is a popular language that we are even required to be fluent since it is universal language.
But then based on my experienced as well it is like they are using it as a deadly weapon. And exactly others are really despising their own native tongue and in order for them to be accepted in a circle then they really have to speak in English wherein they can understand Filipino to each other. In other terms it is like they are already glorifying that language.

It's actually a sign of weakness when they patronize so much of the foreign languages. that's how i see but there's nothing i can do if i speak english, i had to because of my previous job.

That is really normal to speak in English if we are in profession world. Even us as a graphic artist there are some qualification that they required the good communication with the fluency of English.

Hi Metatronik,
We both think that way, English has become a status symbol to Filipinos. But this applies to some Filipinos only. I said some , because there are others too, who have lived abroad for a long time already, yet when they come to the Philippines, they speak Filipino language with pride in their voice. They don't speak English here but Flipino.
But to some , it has really become a status symbol. They think that anyone hearing them speak English with their family even if they all can speak Filipino and is in the Philippines, will be thinking of them as "class".
It is understandable to speak English if you are in a formal event where it is the medium or in an office where there are office mates who are foreigners. But if not, then why speak not speak Tagalog? After all, we are all Filipinos!

Thanks for understanding my point SMPLYD.
We know somebody from America as well that they speak Filipino when they are at home and they are only talking English if they are outside the house and of course when they are already talking with Americans. There is nothing wrong to learn on how to speak in English but the problem is others are not already giving respect and pride to our own native language. And others are already basing the fluency of English to judge them as a person. Too bad there are people who are using this language as ego booster instead of being objective for using this language.

Status symbol? Filipinos nowadays are very eager and determine to learn english language because they want to show to the judgemental people that they can. Yes, I'm not that good enough in speaking but I'm here in mylot to enhance it and to learn new things. It dont matter if you are rich or poor. Just show to the world what we got and be proud. Let's help and cheer our fellow 'kababayans' instead of degrading their personality. We are all Filipino. Remember that Filipinos are well known because of the 'bayanihan' (unity).

That is exactly the point instead of helping others to correct their grammatical errors chances are other Filipinos are laughing on it to prove something on themselves. Because there are others that are fluent but then they are not educated enough or doing it as part of defense mechanism against their other weaknesses like they can't solve the simple problems.

If you've been on conferences and meetings you'd notice that English is almost, always used as a medium to communicate. I think the people who brand the English language as a language for rich and classy people are the ones who envy them. About discrimination, I guess that's a whole different topic. I myself have a pretty decent command over the English language but if you get to know me, you'd find that I'm pretty much "jologs" myself. It all boils down to each person's perspective on life.

I understand your point especially the importance of using that language especially when we are in profession. But then there are really other people who treated that language as the most powerful weapon to attack others like they will put you down if you are not that fluent. It was also like you should be afraid of that person because he/she is nosebleed.

Status symbol? Not really.
It is just that being fluent in English is a proof that they have learnt something in their schooling proving them as educated individuals.

But I believe even if a person is not really good in fluency of English they are still educated. What if it is not the person's expertise? Would that be mean that person is not educated?

It's really an advantage if you have good command of other languages, not necessarily English, since languages are a primary tool for communication. We also can't deny the fact the English is the universal language so the more we are at ease with speaking the language the more comfortable we are in using it. Same goes with the uneasy feeling of those who are not well adept with it. To some degree, I can say that someone has an edge or will be looked up to by others if they speak English very well because that only means that they did their homework or they have family members who works in the US. We all know that if you have a relative who works in the US, it's normal impression that they are rich, it could be true for some but not for everyone of course. But it doesn't necessarily translate that when you're good at speaking English, you're already ahead of others. The language is just a tool, the content of your words would define how intellectual the person is. Which reminds me of a colleague who used to speak English with a twang but some colleagues make fun of him because apart from the twang, his words were all non sense and worse it's full of grammar errors. But I can't say that those who try to master English are social climbers, you need English to apply for a job, you need to be good in English before you get promoted, you need good English to communicate with the higher ups so there are far more advantages if you know English well than those who don't. There's a big difference between pretending to know the language and those who learned the language.

There is really nothing wrong to learn the language where in fact all of us are required to learn it in order for us to get a job. Even as a graphic artist it is also included in qualification that we must have fluency in English. But what I hate the fact is that they are already glorifying that language. They thought that whenever they speak in English they are far better from the other people.

Sorry if I will not totally agree with you on this matter. I know people who grew up only learning the English Language but they are not acting like social climbers nor are they acting like elite members of the society. I guess it would matter on how the person was raised. If the person grew up in a family where they act like they are the highest person living then they will be acting like one eventually. But if the person was raised to be down to earth and humble even if they are the richest family on earth then he/she will not be the social climber type of person when she/he grows up. A friend of mine grew up to speak only the English language but she is pure Filipino, grew up and raised here in our country. She tried to learn our dialect because she doesn't want other people to think that she is an elite member or a social climber and because she is in our country, it would be appropriate if she learns to speak our language. She is educated I should say, and she is working hard to earn so I can't say she is indeed rich. If she is, she shouldn't have 2 jobs now. Filipinos are not scared of speaking English. And we should be proud that we now the language far better than any other non-English speaking countries. Why would these so many call center companies have their company run here in our country if they don't see our potential to speak the English language?

Yes, I completely understand you. I have encountered so many Filipinos who are trying to speak English even if they are wandering the streets of their own country. They even try to correct and laugh others who are not fluent with the language which is a sad part because for sure, they too were not fluent in English before. I live near a call center company and there are really times when I ride a jeepney and its full of employers from that company, I really hate listening to them because even if they are already outside the company premises the still speak English. I am thinking either their such a show off or they are practicing to speak even better.

What I am trying to point out is that there are some Filipinos who tend to discriminate the fellowmen who are not fluent in English. Good thing at least you know someone that is down to earth who is willing to learn our native language. I have known someone who are like that as well but then unfortunately there are some people that I know are not like that or opposite with a person that is down to earth. I know one who is actually insecure to her face value but she uses the English language as part of her weapon then she has the mentality that if others are not fluent in English then probably they are low IQ and she has bad impression for those people who are not fluent in English. Another example here are my 2 cousins from USA who was actually born here and they are a pure Pinay. They really tend to loathe themselves for being a Filipino even the language. Then it is the same thing that they are using English language to prove themselves that they are smart or intelligent at the same time they were raised as social climbers. Then if they have seen other Filipinos who are not fluent in English they really laughed on it. They are using the English language for bragging purposes instead of using it as just another means of communication for the advantage. I am not saying that Filipinos are scared to use that language but then again it is like others are using it like a weapon that you can't throw any rebuttal to others if you are not fluent in English, I mean they are acting like that which is also based to my observations.

I quite agree with respond before me. English is something you learn at school. If you learn it and you can speak it well, it just speaks of your education. It is not a fault of the person if they use it more than use their mother language or other dialect. As for using it as a 'weapon' or people making fun of other people who don't know or can't speak English, it's just a reflection that even education didn't bring them respect and they are just being shallow.
English might be perceived as a 'status' symbol but even some people who aren't rich can understand and speak a little of English. Not knowing the whole language and how to use it is a shallow way of saying that a person isn't educated enough or has a corrupt behavior.
Funny thing, I always don't why people in our country insists that the foreigner try some Filipino words. The foreigner will, of course, obliged and it sounds funny when they speak it. And we are guilty of snickering behind their backs and far from their faces becuase they sound funny. They truly do. I don't know what that means to us as a nation and as a people who speak English as a second language.

I don't actually question if they want to use English rather than our native language. I just totally dislike it if others are bragging about their fluency in English that would thought it could make them so handsome, pretty, elite and hot.
