Tips for travelling in other countries

Hi everyone. I just read from a blog that 2 female travellers from my country were accused of being drug traffickers during their recent trip. It was a very traumatic experience for them as they were rudely questioned and investigated. One even had to remove ALL of her clothing for a bloody body check! They were in a helpless situation in a foreign land and these officers can easily frame them up should they decide to. This got me worried and paranoid as well because we have a scheduled travel in Aug. and there will only be 2 of us, both female. Have you ever been in a similar situation? Are there any tips/advice you can share to other myLotters to avoid being suspects or how to handle such a situation in case it happens to us? What are the safety precautions you do to avoid being framed up or just safety precautions in general? Lastly, I just want to say this and hopefully, I won't be tagged with names by other myLotters. Shame on you officers for being so lousy at your jobs, for being so rude, and for being racists! You think your country is perfect? Think again. You're just a small dot in the map.

Hi Manubla, I was taken aback by this. I am planning to go on a travel to other countries maybe soon. Still processing my papers though. Well, good thing I am a man. But doesn't guarantee me any convenience. I wouldn't know what to do if I will be in such a situation. Those two girls you've written about were just brave enough bear and go through those unjust inconvenience. For you, just be extra careful and proper gestures should help you with passing through some security checks and all. Avoid any gestures that could misled them to suspect you as someone they'd think a danger to their country... On officers being racist, they'll have their time. Karma won't let them pass it. Justice shall be served to them soon. I hate racist. I want to see people gathered together happy notwithstanding their color, races or places of origin. Take care on your trip. And of course pray for a safe trip. chuyins

I was about to make my comment but then when I read yours, I think you have said it well enough. You made a very good advice chuyins. We'll for you Manubla, all I can say is pray a lot. Wherever we are, there are a lot of trials. Racist are everywhere,we even have it in our own country. Just do everything right so that airport officers will not have a chance to suspect you of anything bad. Take extra care. Read about airport policies especially the country policies of the country you are visiting. Check your baggage well and lock it. Avoid accepting baggage sent from friends if you don't know what's inside of it. Better check it or else don't accept it instead. Just be kind to explain everything to your friend. Thanks!

Hi chuyins and meticulo. Incidentally, my teammate who travelled out of the country recently was sharing to us a story about the experience of his seatmate in the plane. I thought it was familiar so I let him check the blog to see if we're talking of the same thing, he confirmed that the blog owner was indeed his seatmate. Both of you are from PH, you might want to check chyngreyes.com. She's the one with the experience. Scary really, and irritating for them to generalize on things. And of course saddening that they see us that way. Thanks for the tips. Yeah, prayers do wonders. I would never forget that. I'm really hoping that it will be smooth for me and my friend.

Hi Meticulo, That was just sweet of you. Made me smile! You made pretty great advices too. Very well said. Hi Manubla, And it happens to be my "kababayan" eh? hmmmm, that was just cruel of them. Anyways, meticulo here had some great points you should bear in mind as you go on your travel. Just where are you heading for? Don't go to where they'd gone (i mean the girls on the blog)... It was just so terrifying. waaaaaaaah, I planned to go to that place they went, but because of what happened to them, I might just have a second thought. Might as well spend my money in a much more enjoyable experience in another country. Very disappointing. To think, we're not that distant to their looks we're the same color. But they're just the worst racist!!!

Hi there, my travel buddy! I hope we don't run into that kind of trouble in SG-ML. I mentioned that in one of the discussions here. I guess when we backpack the rest of SEA, we'll be avoiding THAT place, don't you think?

Yeah, it was out of my list the moment I read the blog actually . And yes, hope we don't have to deal with any of it in any airports. My teammate said it was easier to enter SG when coming from KL so that gives me a little peace of mind. We'll just have to print all our itineraries, tickets and hotel reservations and don't forget your company ID as well!

I think if much depends on the people at thwe airport. Some are plain stupid, other are nice human beings. I have never had any problem at airports. But my daughter went 6 years ago to see her american "mom" (she was 1 year in the US with a scholarship). She went with her 2 children, the youngest a baby a few months old. In spite of my daughter being a lawyer, a judge in my country (which here is being an authority), the people at the airport made her take away the baby´s diapers while my eldest granddaughter cried and yelled in outrage. They haven´t gone back again to the US and they don´t plan to go ever. Janet(Mom) will probably come for a visit this year. The US started to charge a big fee for outsiders to enter the country as tourists a while ago. Many countries in South America (I don´t know of other places) including Chile, my country, made a special extra fee for americans as a way of being paid for the harrasment. I had an american BF some years ago and we went to Foz de Iguazú together, I laughed until I cried when I passed quickly all frontiers with my national identity card while he had to show everything and pay even for breathing. Not his fault, but his government´s.

hi manubla, im so sorry for what happen to this person, sometimes officer in charge they are not well trained to be in that position, they as you said are racist and cannot control themselves in situations like this, i travel from the philippines to mexico stopping by in hong kong, also in london and i did not experience anything bad treat by officers, in france i was warn by an officer by the time my bag was been scanned twice and one officer call me gently that i had my gab retained because i have a scissors in my bag that i suppose not to have in, gently they explain to me that i most leave it, after all they were right i did not check my bag for sharpy things i most not carry with me.

Hi investor, Yeah, based on the story, I think the officers were not professional enough in executing their roles. Noted on the sharp objects. I shall not have any of those. Thanks for sharing.
