Do you count your calories?

I'm trying to lose some weight. It has risen 12lbs (5kg) over the past several months. I'm beginning to see tummy bulges, bigger thighs and butt. I tried to do some jogging to lose weight, but I notice I ate more too then. After a while, my friend told me to sign up at a website. It is caloriecount.about.com. She told me to track what I eat. Based on your weight and your targeted weight, the system will calculate the desired calories needed for a day. There were days when I was consuming too much calories, while other days I had less. The good thing is that you can also track your nutrients and analyse them in a chart. You can also track your activities and it will gauge how much you burn. So do you track the amount of calories you take?

I used to count calories. After sometime, i thought it was a waste of time. I now use estimation and make sure i eat healthy food only. Sometimes, it is alright to reward yourself with something. Not everything in life revolves around losing weight, there is something called enjoying too.

Hi David, I have to qualify that I'm not just counting the calories only. The website helps you to record the food's calories, vitamins and minerals as well. Thus you basically have a holistic idea whether you are eating a healthy food. It will also highlight if it is too high in fat or sugar or sodium or cholestrol. In this initial stages, it does seem like I'm spending way too much time to record everything, but it creates so much awareness with regards to the food I normally eat. I am able to choose healthier food in the process, less fried food and more fruits and vegetables. I also have a cheat day where I eat anything I liked. So I won't feel so deprived. Hi tonirose, It's unfortunate that rice is our staple food in this part of the world. It is very difficult to totally take it away from my diet. Thus, I can only reduce the portions. At the same time, discipline is the ultimate solution to losing weight, I agree. Glad your friend is able to lose weight.

I used to count calories, however, over time it made me feel that I'm trying to famish myself and I no longer enjoy meals because of too much counting. I think it's good to stay healthy, but if you're miserable with your life, what's the point? I think it's good to just know your limits and just exercise if you can. Yes, there will be fluctuations with weight, but as long as you still look good and feel good, I don't think it's something to worry about. I have seen a lot of people who are fit and slim but are not happy. They have to watch every single thing they put their mouth into and I don't think it's a life I'd like to live. So there you go, just know your limit. Be happy.

I agree that we need to be happy. I am not happy with my weight per se, I was more unhappy that I was not eating healthily. I am eating lots of fried food, convenience food and such. I also eat out a lot, thus it became pertinent that I choose the right food knowing that I am not getting any younger. By tracking what I ate, I began noticing that I was making better and healthier choices. I became resistent to recording unhealthy food in my calorie counter site and refused to eat them even when served right in front of me. I am more conscious. I used to just eat whatever I liked.

What's a calorie? I don't pay any attention to that stuff. I've never been on a diet in my life. I'm naturally thin and I can eat what I want. Don't mean to brag that's just how it is for me. Heck for years I've been trying to gain weight. I do try to eat healthy and try to watch the sugar and salt intake and try to stay away from processed foods other than that I believe everything in moderation.

I used to be like you. I have been naturally thin for most of my life. I could eat anything and remain like a stick, some people called me. But as age and metabolism catches up on me, plus my new job which entails more sedentary lifestyle as well as entertaining clients (which does not help my waistline), my weight began to rise drastically over the past few months! Thus, I need to watch my calories.

Yes, I do count my calories. I have lost over 20 lbs doing this. It is a great feeling to see the pounds shed off. I usually record my calories in a food journal so that I know everything that goes into my body. I feel that this is the best way for my body to lose weight and it really responds to this. Good luck with the new site. :)

Hi Oscar, It's great to hear that you had a positive experience from counting calories. Even though there are days when I go overboard with the eating and snacking, and loaded on too much calories, the great thing is that you can start all over again the very next day. Most days I'm able to cut down some calories, here and there. At the same time, it helps me to get off my feet and exercise, as I could log my activities as well. So after jogging for half an hour, it's creates great pleasure to record these activities in the activity log and see how much I have burnt, so in the end I would still be able to cut down my calories. Losing 20 lbs is a great success. Congrats! I don't need to lose that much though. I'd be happy to lose half of what you lost. I must keep at it. I know it will eventually pay off.

My friends and I have been talking about recuding weight in the past few days. She also mentioned to me this website. I find it awesome. It will really manage your daily food intake.

Oh, your friend also suggested it? That's great. I find it so useful. I can track my food and drinks, analyse whether I have enough nutrients at the end of the day. i can track my activities as well. I become more aware of the food I eat, whether they are healthy or not. I start to avoid unhealthy ones, even when they are served right before my eyes. I learn to avoid them.

Honestly I don't count calories and I am awful for diets. I just can't resist the temptation. I recently lost 20 pounds but was with a naturals pills a friend recommend me. There is nothing better to lose those extra pounds you are carry on. At the end we feel so good with our self.

Hi Jameygc, I agree with you. Whichever way we use to lose those extra pounds is eventually going to increase our self-confidence and make us feel good about ourselves. After more than a week counting calories and doing some simple exercises, I already feel a little lighter. My steps are a little more bouncy and brisk. I don't feel so sluggish. And best of all, I could fit into my pants without much of a struggle.

I understand. There are times when I lost count too. But I try my best to recall what I ate during the day. I have access to the internet at work and at home, which makes it easier for me to record my food intake. If you have those smartphones, you can also download the calorie counter apps.

Today I weighed myself at a shop. Yesterday my friend weighed himself and it was quite a shock. I believe that I kept some of my pregnancy weight due to being so weak and ill after the birth of my daughter. Now she is almost two years old I want to try to loose weight. I plan to drink more water and drink less sugary fruit juices. I will eat grapefruit at breakfast time and have salad with a low fat dressing on every day. I am keen on the idea of counting calories. I am trying to do more exercise in order to lose some weight. I think water with ice and a little lemon or lime for extra flavor sounds great to me. I would like to lose 2 to 4 stone ideally. Good luck with your dieting.

Hi maximax8, I have been weighing myself at home and it remained at a reasonable number. Then I weighed at my mum's and I was 3kg more than what I thought I was supposed to be. It was a rude shock. My bathroom scale is out of order. As my appetite rose, my weight rose another 2kg. That was when I decided that there is a need for me to do something about my weight. I used to drink a lot of carbonated drinks. Now I choose water or zero calorie drinks to quench my thirst. Sugary drinks are a killer! When I tracked my food and drinks, I discovered that a can of coke cost me a LOT of calories, but it does not make me full at all. Grapefruit is a good choice. It has been deemed as a fruit for losing weight. Another one is pineapple. I need to lose one stone, not too much. Good luck with your dieting!

hi sydneyhazelton I never count calories just carbs and stay under a certain num ber each day so my blood sugar stays where it is supposed to be. I feel good when I'm just right with my blood sugar count.I feel awful if I let it get too high though. I try to eat all my fruit and veggies each day so they will buffer any higher caloried foods.Fruits and veggies our nurse diabetes educator called the scrubbers as they get rid of the more simple carbs and keep our blood sugar stable, not too high and not too low either.we must have a little glucose always going to our brains for best of health.

Hi Hatley, Having a particular medical condition, there is a need for you to watch a specific aspect of your diet, specifically your blood sugar count. Thank you for your tip on the scrubbers. I think I need to put more of that into my diet.

I was obsessed with counting calories once. I have a diary in which i kept record of everything i had in the day and also how much work out i did. I had to do cardio and pilate's everything. Even when i had achieved my goal that is to be at healthy weight again, i didn't stop, i turned thin and i was so afraid of gaining weight, i couldn't stop counting calories. My obsession reached to a stage when i started panicking about having just 100 extra calories. Since i've quit counting calories, i've quit exercising and everything, i have an idea of how much i need to eat everyday to maintain weight and so go by that. I want to start exrcising again, since i dont feel that healthy anymore, even though i'm thin. Counting calories left me with this side effect that, still sometimes i end up starving myself for no reason. :|

Ouh... That's a bit extreme. I think I love food too much that I would not turn that obsessive with weight. In fact, I have never really dieted in my life. In my younger days, I could eat anything and everything and remained thin. My main concern for wanting to lose weight was that it rose 5kg within just a couple of months. I knew that if I let things be, I can start to be overweight real soon. Thus, I decided to count my calories. It had a positive impact on me. Sometimes, people in the house buy food that is not particularly unhealthy, for example, food that may be high in cholestrol or something like that. But I still eat them, just that I reduce the portion. I used to be tempted to eat 2 pieces, but now I just eat one, and I find something more healthy to eat to fill me up. At the same time, I can choose to not eat the food served, because I knew that it is not healthy. I became more aware of food I eat and made better choices. I don't panic when I eat more calories on one day, it's normal especially when I have some cravings. Great thing about this site is that I get to know what is the amount of calories I needed to maintain my current weight. I never knew about this before.

SydneyHazelton, You're like my sister who's now worried about her weight, she'd do anything to lose it. I admit I'm overweight too but I'm not too worried and I don't count calories. I worry about having too much meat on my body. But I don't think counting calories is an effective method to lose weight and here's why. The calories in food don't indicate the fat or carb content of the food. You may find that a raw unpeeled apple has 250 calories compared to a piece of Arnott biscuit which only has 150 calories but has 2 g of fat whereas an apple with a higher calorie has absolutely no fat content. So you may be eating less calories but be consuming tons of fat which would contribute to gaining weight. The best is to consume more fruits and vege and consume less fat because fruits and vege have little or no fat at all. Don't think that all fruits have no fat at all. Avocados, coconuts and durians are notoriously high in fat content. Personally, I think the best way to lose weight is to eat in moderation and to exercise. These are the only ways.

Hi Uminoor, maybe I failed to highlight that this site not only calculates calories per se. In fact, it calculates all nutrients, vitamins and minerals as well. Thus, you can analyse based on individual food or what you ate in a day, where it is high in sodium or fat. It will be highlighted in red. Each food is also graded from A to F, in terms of its healthiness. Eating in moderation is great advice. My appetite seems to have grown while my metabolism has deteriorated. By tracking my food intake, I can keep it in check. Thank you for your valuable contribution!

One of the easiest and fastest ways to lose weight is to use a smaller plate. Most people use a large dinner-plate. So replace it with a smaller side one. You can still eat all the same food but you won't be piling on the pounds!

I like this idea. There are times when the food that has been cooked at home contains lots of fat and calories. What I did was to get a small plate instead of a dinner plate. After eating the small plate of food, I waited for my brain to digest that I am full. At least, when I record my food intake, I can say I had half a serving.

I don't. I would simply excersize for one hour a day. if you begin to count your calories, that's how a lot of different eating disorders start. simply excersize and be concious of what you eat, try to eat healthier snacks and such.

It's great that you exercise for an hour a day. I wish I could do that. I don't throw up my food. Neither do I starve myself, depriving me of the nutrients I need. Like you mentioned, I need to eat healthier food and snacks. This calorie counting website helps me analyse my food intake and rate them, so I'm aware which is healthy and which is not. Before this, I just eat what I like. I love carbonated drinks, fries and chips. These are not healthy for me. Nowadays I avoid them, because after logging in the food, I realise how these food are unhealthy for me. I definitely need to exercise more. Thanks for the reminder!
