As I am sure every member here has noticed, no matter where you are from food prices have gone insane. I have a large family to feed and while the costs are going up the income and need never really change. Many of my friends have switched to all canned fruits and veggies for now to save money but this idea didn't settle with me so well. I am a fresh food addict I crave baby spinach and melon of any breed all day long. Very good to the body not so much the wallet. I was very frustrated with this situation and with us living in a deed restricted subdivision I didn't feel I would be able to do much about it. Boy was I wrong!
With a little (A LOT
) help from my super green thumbed sister in MO (I'm in Fl) I have a container garden with stuff I would have never thought would grow in containers. Pie pumpkins, long necked squash, broccoli, cauliflower, collard greens, baby spinach, bell pepper, red onions, tomatoes, red cabbage, corn (
that one shocked me) and lots of herbs (we would be here a while). With a small investment of less than $100, most of which was decorative stuff I'm an artist everything gets decorated, I have cut my grocery bill in half and found a really cool little garden buddy in my 7 year old.
If you are considering a backyard garden but need to stick to containers please do not let that discourage you. It can be done, fairly simply with a small amount of research, and can look pretty as well (important to the HOA).
Have a happy and healthy summer everyone.

I agree with you one hundred percent. Having a garden in your backyard is not only something that is a great hobby, but also a money saving effort to say the very least. The costs are a bit steep to buy produce in the stores. Especially in this day and age. Plus, you never know what is being done with those vegetables that are being sold in the store. Sure they might be saying that they are natural, but you never know exactly how much truth they are saying.
Growing your own vegetables is a relaxing hobby in many ways. Also it is a way to really save a lot of money. Plus if you do well enough, you might be able to open a produce stand of your own and sell them. That's actually what paid me for part of my college. Granted, there are going to be years where its not going to turn out that well. Therefore, you just need to exercise a great deal of patience and everything will work out in the end. A backyard garden is a really great thing.
