Builder's tea?

I know that some of you live in the UK so maybe you can confirm if this is true or not. We have a cooking show here and the woman doing the show went to the UK to find out about the food over there. She went to the Museum in London for some Fish n Chips, it did look very delicious and I now have the recipe to make the batter. Then she went to a place for a cheese sandwich. It was an outdoor stand and apparently William makes the best. She then tried Indian cooking at Saffron's. A pink restaurant with great recipes there also. Then off to the St-George to sit outside and have a beer. What a surprise to find out that you drink your beer warm and not cold. Here the colder the better. I always thought that if you drank warm beer you could get sick. I guess its not true. (I dont drink beer) Finally she went to a Tea house (sorry I forgot the name of the place) She had tea of course, sandwiches and scones. While there she was with a woman living in the UK and thats when she talked about the "builder's tea". She said that if they have men working at their houses while they are away, they'll leave a tea pot with cups and milk and sugar for them to have while they work. Is this true? Do you still do this or its something that was done a long time ago?

As a nation we still run a lot on tea. There were even plans based around how we would get tea in the event of a nuclear attack (I kid you not!). If we have workmen to the house I make tea - although a few will ask for coffee or something else. There is the kind of tea drinking that is refined - afternoon tea - and there is the kind of tea drinking where it's a hot caffienated beverage that helps you get going. Probably because of our colonial past in India and China we drink a lot of tea rather than coffee.

Wow, you must drink a lot of tea to have plans made in case of an attack!!! You sure sound like you are a tea people. The show I watched, she did go for afternoon tea at a lovely place with the sandwiches and the scones....I dont drink tea myself but I think I would have at that place it was so lovely and the scones look simply DELICIOUS!! I'll try to make some from the recipe she shared on the website. Thanks for letting me know!
