Heart Wrenching Indeed

Just read an article about child brides and I could not help feeling out of sorts. I hope your mood will not be greatly affected but perhaps motivate you from discouraging your friends, peers or even family members from considering such a cruel act. The brides in the article are as young as 5 years old and their grooms are actually grown men. In the civilized world today, such marriages are not only discouraged but illegal where I have to feel a sense of relief for young girls in my country - where at the other side of the globe these girls are actually made to fulfill duties as an adult wife. I am sorry but I really cannot understand what on earth these people are doing? I blame these countries for permitting such a marriage, I blame their particular religions for these practices and I blame the parents of these brides for putting personal interests before their young daughters. What kind of religion, government and parents do we have here? Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2001029/Child-brides-young-5-married-secret-middle-aged-men.html

hi skysuccess. i was on a skype chat with a mylot friend (bhabycatch) when she forwarded me the link to your discussion. i couldn't help but cry. it breaks my heart to imagine myself at that age or anyone i knew for that matter, to be in their shoes as they are carted off to become a child-bride. a childhood robbed is a cruelty and an injustice. lost laughters, lost years, and a chance for a different future. these children missed out on life and chances. i sent an email message to my family and friends and attached the link to the article. thankful that we didn't grow up in such a confined tradition and that we were able to live out our childhoods. my maternal grandmother was married at 14 to her father's bestfriend who was then 37. even in my country, teenage-brides happened in generations past. but more and more people are becoming aware. and this tradition, i hope is lost. fortunately, my maternal grandfather was a very kind one and my grandma was happy until she passed away at 86. thanks for sharing the link.

yes... i can't understand how those parents can do that to their own daughters. they just don't deserve to become parents. high mortality rates amongst child/teenage mothers and their infants are because of lack of health awareness and abuse in their young bodies, forced to become adults even before they mature physically, mentally and emotionally.

bhabycatch013, These people and whatever they believed in especially religion should be stopped, indeed. Even as an outsider, I just could not help feeling for these young tender age girls who are treated like some business bargaining chip or some idiotic fallacy that they might loose their virginity before their intended marriage. Such bigotry! I hope you will remember to take up courage and speak up against these people when your chance arrives.

It's not all children, but girl children who are the commodity. They don't have 60 year old women marrying 6 year old boys.

I am Sorry but why are things like this even allowed? Personally this is Sick, and I feel unhealthy for the children for sure. You hear of things like this all the time and cannot help but wonder how some people can even allow this, and why? Is there not people around that they can be Happy with that are older, or closer to their age? Glad they do not allow things like that here in the US.

Tina, I can understand your frustrations and anger even, but I don't think we can really do anything when their religion could allow their teachings to be radicalized and remain in denial of any wrongdoings. So unless, the authoritative figures start putting their foot down and stamped out these warped factions, these atrocities will still continue to strive.

sick, very sick indeed! i have watched that 5 year old wedding in Discovery channel, too, and i was so appalled of the whole thing. i have read in Reader's Digest about a known model's ordeal in South Africa when she was 6 years old. she was mutilated, and 'circumcised' (getting rid of the cl*toris) at the age of 6 and was forced to marry a 60 yr old in exchange for a dowry. she ran away. she was able to make it and it was her advocacy to speak against female genitalia mutilation when she grew up and became a famous model. those people are sick!

I admire you courage for speaking out on this. I believe that civilization is falling apart at the seams. How else can it be expained?

debrakcarey, I always believe in being responsible for our society and never to cower away when the time comes where the words of Edmund Burke runs deep in my heart: "All that is necessary for evil to triumph is that good men (and women) do nothing." I really feel to speak out, here.

And yet there are those who will defend this religion as a religion of 'peace' and tell anyone who points these things out that they're intolerant.

Hiya SKY, Did not think that Girls of this age were being treated like that. I have known about older Girls but not tiny tots like those ones. I know that the Kings and Queens of before used to be betrothed in marriage from an early age. But I thought that was that and that they got married much later on say about 15 or 16 years of age. It is shocking really to think that this kind of thing still might be going on.

Hiya SKY, Maybe one Day those Parents will realize what they did and they will regret it for sure. There are so many things that go on and I am not able to understand altogether what makes them do it. Glad am I that I don“t have to see any of mine having to go off like that to that kind of fate. This kind of thing leaves you without words it really does.
