Milwaukee Teachers Union vote to fire 200 teachers instead of accept concessions

In a system where seniority is everything and merit means nothing, why would those with seniority give a crap about those who don't? Milwaukee Public Schools will have to fire 200 teachers, increase class sizes to around 35 kids, and do away with school nurse programs. There is a way to allow those people to keep their jobs though... that is, for the teachers union to accept the pension and medical coverage concessions covered in the Budget Repair Law. But the union says NO WAY! In other words, jobs mean nothing. Solidarity and "brotherhood" is a lie. All that matters is protecting the union leaders. The teachers aren't willing to give an inch. They eat their young, and smile.

hi parated I am so confused by all the awful things those union memb ers are doing. as a young girl, I am in my 80'ts now, I was taught that the unions were a good thing that worked to help people make more money and live better bu t these people are not doing any of that, what happened to change union members into thugs? I know here in Californina in p laced where they cut back teachers and increased the class sizes the kids grades suffered because they could not all get the teacher'[s attention as needed. You would think the teachers would want whats best for the children?

Employment laws made unions irrelevant, but the thugs who run the unions can't stand the idea that they might have to get honest jobs someday.

I don't now all the facts and details of this particular school district but I will say this - there has to be a willingness to compromise on both sides and if the teachers union refuses to give at all, they're wrong. Annie

The telling thing here is, the current contract is up in 2013, which means they will all have to accept the same concessions then (as a matter of law). So the teachers with tenure are willing to see their "brothers and sisters" fired, just to not have to help pay into their pensions and medical benefits until then. There is no "solidarity" or "collective bargaining" here. There is only "I got mine, piss on you".

To normal, reasonable people that would seem insane. I don't understand their reasoning and from what I hear, they would not have to contribute much to the pensions and medical coverage. For sure they don't have to contribute as much as people like you and I. It'd be great if those 200 fired teachers and nurses would bring a class action suit against the union. I'd donate to their legal expenses.

There are way too many entitled teachers out there. And the truly good teachers are not afraid to admit it. It's time that the good teachers, not just the ones who have been around the longest, got the good pay and benefits.
